Hi all,
I am thinking about getting 70-200 F4 for my 400D.

Can somebody post some landscape (city street also) pictures made with that lens?...

I am trying to convince myself that it is worthy to get this lens.
Right now I have 18-55 (kit lens) and 50mm 1.8. (edit: wrote 17-55 originally - typo)

Thanks in advance!

Here are some i took, possibly not landscape as such but there are a few non-wildlife/sports shots which i too was after before i purchased the lens.

Hope these are helpful...

Pognig, that first photo you shared looks very soft, why is that? :S

I'm not sure if this is the type of 'street' photo you're talking about (and please note I am a beginner, so others will be able to post better examples of what the 70-200 lenses can do), but here's the second picture I took with a new 70-200mm F/4L IS on a 400D; it's a view out my window at work in downtown Richmond, Virginia:

I don't remember what the settings were (maybe somebody can pull exif data off the picture somehow?) -- sorry!

Here's the first picture I took with that lens (same location, different window):

Well... here comes the decision I have to make.
I am afraid 70-200 on a 1.6 crop is just too long, and I won't find too much use for that great lens.
Considering getting 28-135 because - not too expensive and have somewhat good range.

Owners of 70-200 F4... do you find this lens useful as a walkaround lens?

Here's one I just took two days ago...

I find this lens being used in places I never thought I would, when I first bought it :).

You really should check out this dedicated 70-200 f/4L picture thread before dismissing the idea:

You said you have the kit lens right? (I am assuming you meant the 18-55, or do you have the 17-55 IS?). I bought this lens back when I just had the kit lens and I found that the range was good, if you want wider than 70 you've got your 17(18?)-55, however, you have the 70-200, when you want a bit more range :).

Thanks for the link!

So I looked at those pictures, and they are really nice.
The only problem is that 95% of them are animals, close detail pictures. I think I saw only 2 landscape pictures. I am worried that this lens might not be the one I am looking for - or not for the type of photography I would like to do - i.e. pictures of nature in the mountains, lakes, small rivers, etc..

Also street photography of the old European places...

But what else could I get for reasonable price?... Even after so many months I still feel so "fresh" into the whole lens craziness ;)))

It sounds like you want wide instead of long, in that case you can upgrade your kit lens with the 17-40L or the 17-85IS which are both around the same price. If you want something a little wider then what you already have then the 10-22 EFS is the widest you can get for your camera.

70-200 is really for getting you closer, but as you;ve seen it can be used for landscapes but that's not what most people use it for.

My regular landscape gear is 3 lenses: Canon 10-22, 24-70 and 70-200. I'd say as far as usage it's probably 20/50/30. The 70-200 definitely gets a lot of use, it's sharp, contrasty, and light!

In portrait mode it works well for panos if you don't have a parallax adapter. If you do as below I suggest a cokin filter system for it as polarizers suck for panos.

Your kidding, right? :D

Get one of John Shaw's books. It seems he shoots half his shots with a zoom in this focal length.

Here is some eye candy from this great Canon zoom:
Post your 70-200 f/4L shots here! [Page 1]: Canon EOS 300D/350D Forum: Digital Photography Review (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1031&thread=14245789)

This probably one of Canon's best zooms. You'd be hard pressed to do better - especially at its price point. Really, this is almost the zoom that everyone should own.

you can achieve some great landscape shots with this lens. you've gotta know when to use it though as even at 70mm its sometimes too tight of a crop for a landscape shot, unless of course your lucky enough to own a 5D as well

Sorry.

If there is one slam dunk tele lens purchase, this is it. If you can get there, the IS version is even better. (I have both).

This lens has such great color saturation, contrast, and sharpness that I need to do very little post processing from this lens if I have done my job and gotten the exposure and composition right in camera.

The 70-200 makes for a great landscape lens. All you have to do is pick up one of John Shaw's books. He is very big on his Nikon 80-200 and I'd bet about a third of his shots use this lens.

It literally is one of Canon's best zooms.

It is just fine on a 1.6x crop body. I use it both on my XT and on my 5D. It performs very well on both.
