View Full Version : Filter Question??

I have a sigma 15-30 that I really like (use it on my 10d). I would like to buy a ND filter and a polarizer for it, and here is my question. I was going to buy the filters in a 95mm size and then buy a step up ring for an 82 to a 95. There are 82 mm threads on the removable hood on the sigma. Do you all think this will work - will it be wide enough to prevent vignetting? Also, if I was so lucky enough to someday buy a MarkII, do you think it will be wide enough to use on that with the 1.3 multiplier?

I ask because the dang polarizers in that size are $$ and I dont want to make a big mistake!! Only to find out that it does not work.

Thanks in advance....

You won't have a vignetting issue, because your filter is larger than the lens hood. If you were fitting an 82 filter to a 95 lens, you'd have problems.

Thanks, Bruce. I just wanted to make sure my thinking was alright this morning.

If I were you, I'd get (or borrow) a step-up ring first and check for vignetting.
I know that the 12-24 has a very similar (if not the same) removable hood - and anything screwed into the hood will vignette. Just reducing the internal diameter of the hood front is enough to do it on the 12-24, irrespective of how big a filter you put on top.
A step-ring is somewhat cheaper than a filter if it doesn't work ;-)

Just got the stepup ring (82 - 95) and there is no vignetting on the Sigma 15-30 lens at all. It is going to be nice to finally use a polarizer and ND filter on the lens. I take a lot of waterfall photos and the ND filter will come in handy. I really didnt think filters on the front of that lens would work -
