a friend of mine (no, seriously a fried of mine) knocked his 10D with a 17-40 zoom and the 550EX flash attached of the table and onto a hard tile floor.
The camera and lens seem to be OK. Still focussing, and taking shots. The tile floor survived the impact too :D
The only damage seems to be to the base plate fo the flash that slides into the flash shoe. That piece is cracked. Can it be replaced? Or is the whole flash ruined now?
Glad it wasn't my camera, but still gives me a chill thinking about it!

Send it in to Canon - or any other repair place. Shoes on flashes are made from plastic so that they break easily - this way the flash shoe breaks and no the camera's hot shoe. They are cheap and easily replaceable for that exact purpose.
