I fired up my 350D today and for some reason it would not meter correctly. I scrolled through every mode and changed lenses but the XT seemed to be stuck at negative exposure on the meter and nothing would correct it. I removed the Opteka grip and with a fresh battery in the house I had my camera back. The culprit was the grip ! So I cleaned the terminals and reinstalled the grip on the XT powered her up and it was back to negative exposure with no response in any mode. After continued troubleshooting I moved the main dial on the bottom of the grip which dialed the exposure back to reality, I also had response on the main dial on the XT now. I'm figuring the dial on the grip might have been between contacts which froze the response of the camera ???
Anyone ever have similar problems with the Opteka grip ?

Never had a problem like that with mine and I use it quite a bit. I wonder if this could be a warranty issue? I'm not even sure what they offer in terms of warranty.

I'm seeing an increasing number of post regarding camera problems that are traced back to battery grips. Almost without fail these grips are non-Canon branded grips.
I know everyone is interested in saving money, but is it worth jeopardizing your camera by installing a third party grip on it? I wouldn't trust a non-Canon grip on my camera. I'd be worried it could damage the camera and the warranty would be void because it was not a Canon grip.
With the exception of a couple of Tamron lenses I've had for years, everything I connect to my cameras (grip, remote, flash) is Canon.

Canon even had a recall on their battery grip.
I have had my Merkury Grip for over a year and no problems.

Canon even had a recall on their battery grip...
True, but I had no problems with mine before the recall. Those problems are all now a thing of the past. The 20D/30D grips are fine...
