Ok, I'm doign something silly here.
I've stuck a 550EX on the 10D, except it won't work except in {green} square full auto mode.
I can't see anything obvious, anyone else had this?

You have to hit the flash button on the left side of the camera near the lens.

isn't that just to make the built in flash "pop up"?????

Can't remember which one it is, but check your custom functions :)

The Green mode is full auto. No custom functions are available. I suspect that you have Cfn.5 set to 3. When you are in Auto, it has no effect. When you go into any other mode, that prevents the flash from firing. Make sure Cfn. 5 is set to 0 and try again. Let us know if that fixes it.

You might tell us more about "it won't work".
For example, does the flash not fire at all?
What color is the ready lamp? Does it stay lit before and after the flash?
Does the flash fire, but it doesn't seem to sync with the camera?
What camera modes did you try? Did you have a too-fast shutter selected?
Look at the settings that it used for Green Square mode for flash. Now set those same settings into Tv mode or Av mode. Does it work now?
Do you have some special settings on the 550EX flash? For example, High Speed Sync? What does the 550EX's display show?

Been swamped with work.
Tried the flash button - Bull as pointed out.
I'll look at the custom function button.
and as to not working, as in, it just doesn't fire at all.
Green light on flash, but in the view finder, it won't sync to 1/60th, or fire when you depress the shutter button.
Thanks for all the help posted.

I don't know if our problems are related, but you might scroll down to my post about 550EX problems with a Canon D60. Does your 550 fit nice and snug in the shoe? Perhaps there is a contact problem between the two units. I assume that you have tried the pilot lamp test fire, just to make sure that the flash is working. During my initial trouble shooting, I did notice that my 550EX was wobbly in the shoe, and not contacting properly. Unfortunately for me, subsequent tightening of this condition did not solve my problem. Best of luck, because when the flash is working properly it does a great job.

Well the flash fires fine, when on Green (full auto) but I don't get anything when I switch round to p, or anything else that lets me shoot raw.
If you get the same thing, then I guess it would be related.
I've not got the camera with me at the mo, but I've a sneeking suspicion, that the custom functions that some have pointed to, will be to blame.

Well, Scorp...I may not have solved your problem, but you have given me a couple of ideas regarding mine! Thanks in advance if I fix mine, and good luck to you on yours! Cheers.

Green light on flash means that it isn't quite ready. It must be red to be fully ready. I would suggest replacing the batteries with new ones.

I'll try that again, and get back to you, again thanks to everyone for the pointers.
