I would imagine general chat would be the best place for this. I just ordered a Sigma 24-70mm from Dell. I have ordered from them in the past and it's always been great and it was a good deal on the lens. However I am in the military currently stationed in Guam and so I have an APO/FPO address, very common for military members stationed overseas and Dell can't ship the lens. I find this weird because there are so many other places that can? I am not saying Dell is against the military I just find it irritating and needed to vent. Thanks for listening.

Ship it to family and have them ship it to you. That'd work, huh?

yeah but just another step i shouldn't have to go through. i'll just take my business elsewhere. B&H or Adorama, little more expensive but I'm not sure i want to do business with Dell. I just checked back with them and I'd have to go through the government site with dell and all the prices are higher. Good times.

Hey, how is Guam? I might be stopping by there sometime in the future.

It has nothing to do with being in Guam or the military. Dell has a policy that they will not ship to anything but a physical street address.
My sister who lives on a farm had to ship her new computer to me because they don't have a street address.
I've always felt that the courier companies could help out here by having a drop spot that Dell could designate. Sort of a warehouse where you then show up with your id and claim your goods. You can do this if you miss a delivery but you can't ask them to hold for pickup.

Unfortunately it does have something to do with being in the military, the e-mail clearly states they will not ship most things to APO/AP and the redirect me to a government site where they only sell one desktop and a few notebooks.

Guam is good fun! It's super beautiful especially the south end of the island so as long as you get out and do things it's not bad. It's a huge tourist area for the Japanese but there are plenty of clubs/bars if you're into that.

Dell is notorious for the crappy packing job they do when one orders from them. They put my 85mm prime lens in a large box with absolutely no packing material at all. I can't imagine how much damage the equipment would suffer being sent overseas.

That's because an APO address is a PO Box, not a street address. If you have a street address like Barracks 4, Forward Base Zeta, Inalitlvillage, Sumwaristan, they'd have no problem, since that represents a point on the map their delivery service can get to. An APO address doesn't provide them with a way to trace the package to the ultimate destination (as they see it), since your APO could be in Guam, Germany, or Guyana. FedEx, UPS, DHL or the other courier services don't deliiver to other than abbsolute street addresses, and the USPS (who handle APO addresses) doesn't offer what many companies consider adequate tracking and tracing of packages.

I have heard good things from other sailors that have been there. Mostly good things about stuff that submariners like to do. I am looking forward to being there. I am on the Ohio, so I will be forward deployed out of Guam. How much longer will you be there? If you are still around, we should hit some of the more photogenic places together. I always have fun when I visit Air Force bases, people are always friendly.
