Congrats on the lens. You'll love this thing. It is the one lens that spends the most time on my camera.

This is not going to be enough. It never is. The L desires just don't stop. Are you sure that you really want to do this. :D

It's already done. I already placed the order. It's scheduled to arrive on Friday.

No joke. The fever will get you once you find that most of the 'L' Zooms are favorable to primes at the comparable apertures (i.e f/2.8, etc.)

..i'd like to add that the only thing that I don't like about most 'L' zooms are their size and weight, which obviously come with the territory with constant apertures...!

Well, lucky for me, I seem to have started on this L thing at a good time for me. I am in the process of buying a home, and there's a little money left laying around in the process. If things go well with this first lens, I'm probably going to get the 70-200mm in about another 4 to 5 weeks.

Hopefully with those 2 in tow, I'll be ok for another 6 months or so. At 1000 plus a pop, this is an expensive hobbby.

You'll love it...so much better than the 28-135 IS I started with. You may want to watch that 300D; it might snap the lens mount off.... :P

Dude, please don't tell me that. :(

My 10D groans everytime I put the 70-200 f/2.8L on it..!

Don't have that one yet. Hopefully my Rebel can withstand the 24-70. I don't think that one is such a big hoss.

It's still fairly large! I'm sure your Rebel will be fine.

I have the Drebel/24-70 combination. No problems with the mount yet - the 24-70 is the lens that stays on the camera in the bag, so it is the default lens for me. :D

I'm thinking that will likely be the case for me, as well. At least that's what I'm hoping. That's why I chose to buy this one first.

burkdog:

Trust me from experience, with the 24-70L in hand, and the 70-200L (get it with the IS, its awe-inspiring), you'll start pining for the 16-35L. As I shoot more tight indoor shoots, than distance work, I use the 16-35L more than my 70-200L.....

Ok, don't start this! I just ordered the lens. I can't be second guessing myself this early on.

I had this discussion in another thread, already: "which one to get, the 16-35, or the 24-70."

Most agreed the 24-70 was the way to go. I hope I chose right.

I definitely use the 24-70 f/2.8L more than the 70-200 f/2.8L IS. The 16-35 is a great lens, too, though not as optically superior as the other two I just mentioned. I can easily visually identify the shots I've taken with the 24-70 versus cheaper lenses, but I can't tell the difference between the 50 f/1.4 and 24-70mm. In other words, if I don't need the huge aperture of the 50mm, I just use the 24-70mm and get virtually the same quality, even wide open. And when you go full-frame or 1.3X, the 24-70 will be a much more versatile lens (the only constant-aperture L that goes from true wide angle to telephoto).

If you're more than a fair-weather shooter, the weather sealing is awesome, too, especially with bodies like the 1Ds (again here the L zooms exhibit less purple fringing than the lesser zooms... though I still do get fringing) With a Rebel, while you'll need to bag or cover the body, the lens can poke out of the cover and catch shots that would put lesser Canons, Tamrons and Sigmas in the repair shop.

Forget the jokes about the mount, you'll be fine. Of course, you really shouldn't handle a three pound lens like the 70-200 mm just by the camera grip. That tripod collar is a good hint as to where the center of balance is on that setup. The 24-70mm is fine on the rebel.

I do wish you luck. But I think you made a very good choice. You will like the lens very much.

Well, you made a great choice. I'd wish you luck, but with a lens like that, luck is no longer really an issue.

Have fun.

Don't be scared. The 100-400 works great on the 10D.

is it safe to walk around with this thing on my camera ...or should I take it off if the camera is going to dangle from my shoulder when I walk a little bit....I ask cuz I am hoping to have this camera and lens when I go camping in yellowstone and the Tetons(only if I get enough money for the lens and camera and the trip though)

It is not advisable to let the heavier lenses (let's just safely say "the white lenses") dangle from the body due to their weight. In fact, most have tripod mounts on them to allow you to mount them to the tripod and let the much lighter camera body hang off of them.

When I walk with the 10D and a "whitey" attached, I am supporting BOTH at all times, or possibly holding the lens (as the tripod does).

Josh

ok....I just dont want my lens mount to snap off and the lens to fall to the ground....thats an expensive snap for the camera and definitly the lens!!

JoeTampa

Then I would suggest supporting the lens. On the lighter black lenses you are OK. Snapping the lens mount will ruin your whole day. :)

While I agree with supporting the lens to relieve stress on the mount, has anybody actually heard of some one snapping an EOS lens mount on ANY Canon EOS? I certainly have NOT heard of this phenomenon.   Maybe because EOS shooters are more careful with their equipment? 8)

I have not heard of anyone doing so, probably for the reason you cite. However, IIRC, in the manual for those lenses it is mentioned to never use the camera to support them, rather, the other way around.

I *do* know that the 100-400 in particular is heavy enough that I won't chance it. Another photog I know commonly fails to support his 70-200 2.8L with (as of yet) no ill effects. YMMV.

that would really have to suck...just walking along with your camera and the lens falls off along with other parts of your camera....I would prolly end up depressed in a bar cuz i broke my camera :( :( ...good thing I havent had this problem yet cuz I aint legal to drink yet!!!! :x

I saw a bunch of small prints from a 70-200mm non-is today. They looked really, really good. I'm looking forward to getting that lens too someday soon, I hope, except I'm pretty sure I will get the IS version.
