View Full Version : Epson R800 best ultrachrome glossy printer ever?

I was perfectly satisfied with printing glossies on my 2200 until they announced the new R800, which resolves a 'bronzing' problem with earlier Epson printers. I was not aware that 'bronzing' was a problem until now. Bronzing should not be an issue under normal presentation conditions (not viewing prints at an angle)...is this right?

The R800 sounds like the best of both worlds...the glossy look of a Canon printer combined with the ultrachrome pigments of Epson.
Of course, R800 technology is not available on a 13" printer...yet.
Such a slave to marketing.

The prints from the R800 on Epson premium gloss or semi-gloss are fabulous. My other printer is the ill-fated Epson 2000P, which I now use almost exclusively for A3 printing with fine art papers, so I canot compare to results from the 2200.

The new feature that the R800 brings to the party is the Gloss Optimiser cartridge (there are 8 in total). The GO is sprayed on top of the colour inks rather like a varnish so the surface is much smoother - no etched effect - and the uneven reflections are reduced.

Alan Briot has done a review of the R800 on The Luminous Landscape. He describes the results as "indistinguishable from a chemical print" with the naked eye.
