Good Evening,

Monday of this week I visted a Wildlife Park in Kent, and came away with some ok shots. Here is one of a Gorilla HDR'd up....

1 RAW File processed into 3 seperate exposures, then Photomatix, before Elements and final tweaking and resizing :)

It'd look much better if you hadn't messed with the HDR crap. Taking three RAW conversions and HDR'ing doesn't give you anything you couldn't get with levels or filters, and looks really tacky, imo.

Thanks for your reply :)

I've already processed my photo's as normal, was just trying out HDRing the Gorilla because in my opinion the effect worked well with the skin texture and fur. I totally understand it's not to everyone's taste though.

I've seen HDR used very well in a lot of ways but I'm not sure if this is one. IMO, HDR images don't work when they take a photo and make it border on illustration (which is what the Gorilla is starting to look like).

I think the most successfull use of HDR is when the photos are merged to give a greater tonal and color range in the picture - then its impressive because it's something that appears to be telling the truth (this is how this really looks) but yet our eyes are not entirely used to seeing something like that.

I might suggest you toy around with HDR's of architecture or see what other people are doing then revisit your process.

I think the picture is lovely and that the original correct exposure was very impressive given the sharpness of the face. I would love to see the non-HDR if you've got a chance to post it.

Cheers for your comments, I totally agree, I've seen some superb HDR treatments on Buildings and skies. Just thought I'd try something different....

I haven't got the original at hand, due to being on a different computer, but if you click the picture below it'll take you to an extra large version of which the HDR Gorilla is on the far right :)

In the original version the metal frame work in the background was blown out, which you can just make out in the crop....

I actually prefer the first shot, he has this deep expression on his face; I'd be interested to see what it looked like with just a regular conversion.

Your wrong about HDR. You wont get the same look as HDR with just levels or filters. Why knock something because you have no interest in it? HDR has its place in photography, like it or not.

Interesting shot, I think you may have overdone the saturation andcontrast a little. The shot is interesting tho, maybe post another with a little less contrast and saturation.

i think it looks good for an HDR'd gorilla... Lets not hang the guy because he tried something new..i mean, would it be moe pleasing as a selective color shot?
lol

I like your HDR. Although maybe you can get the 'halo' around the the gorilla. You can get rid of this by blending the 0EV and your HDR image.

Everyone's opinions are different, which is what forums are all about, but i'm in the camp of 'nothing contructive to say', then don't say it. It's totally fine that people don't like HDR shots, but why then post in a thread that relates to said subject?!?

Anyways I don't really want this thread turning into some sort of debate.....

Cheers for all the constructive comments everyone :D

it's tonemapped, not HDR'd. if you start out with a single image, it's nothing to do with HDR. labeling stuff HDR when it's not only propagates the misnomer.

The pose of this gorilla is awesome. The post-processing doesnt look that great though.

I actually like the HDR version better... except for the Halo.. But, sometimes you get what you get and have to move on and try it with a different subject.

Oh, lol, I really didnt mean for you to do a Selective color shot... lol That was a cheap poke at the poster who said that the HDR was bad and shouldnt be used..lol But, it also looked good...if youre into that look. Great looking Gorilla though..cheers!

Cheers mate...

lol, the B&W/selective colouring edit was just a little tongue-in-cheek joke thing ;)

The Gorilla was giving me so many different expressions which was the main reason I done a kinda storyboard picture with alot of them on. He was very photography friendly :D

I've been trying out this HDR (Tone-mapping ) on some other stuff, and i'll admit it is easy to overdo it, but I like the effect that it's has on pictures...

Thanks again,

Giz
