I had to get up on high to get him without marsh grass in his face, and pretty severely cropped him to get rid of the water around him. We recently had a LOT of rain, so the area got flooded quite heavily which is why the water looks like it does. It's dragged up dirt that hasn't seen water this high in about 10 years I guess. It's kind of a bummer, as this is one of my favorite shooting places but most of the paths are under water.

Not a great pic, but a beautiful bird, and I'll take it for now.

it is a very beautiful and colourful animal, I wish they were also swimming around here in Holland :(

I like also the troubled water, it gives the picture something extra

I mainly dislike this shot because the water was so ucky-looking. (When you say "justabird" then "ucky" is allowed, too.) But it's also cropped quite a bit - I was only 10 feet away, but 30 feet up in an observation tower so the angle is odd, too. Alas there was no other way to get him with all the reeds at the edge of the water. But no doubt a beatiful bird and I'm glad to have one.

The lens was my trusty old birding lens, the 100-400 L IS. I'm beginning to wish that Canon made the 400mm prime with IS - I rarely use this lens at anything less than 400. Not that 400 is enough for birds, really, but that makes the hunt a bit more fun.

Nice woody. Your right, a 400 prime with IS would be great. I've managed a couple of shots with the 400 prime and really like the results. Keeper I believe.
