Adding effects to edges of photos

What is everyone using to add border or frames and effects to the edges of the photos. I see all kinds of boarders I guess you would call them to photos being posted here. It adds a nice effect to the photos

I sometimes use layers of different sizes and colours to create a border and then I paste my photograph on top.

But, if you just want to create a shadow around your image, then do this:
In photoshop create a new image and fill it completely with one colour, (usually white) > copy and paste your photograph onto this blank image (you now have two layers) > go to Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow and just play around with the settings until you get what you want. :wink:

*EDIT*:

That blank image must be larger than the picture that you're goin to paste on top.

I got it.

1) How can I save an action so someone can download it?
2) How can I add a step - I should have set the color swatches first, but forgot. It's not that hard to get around though - Undo, reset swatches, run action again.
3) How can I edit a sub-action? Like if I set the frame to be 20 pixels wide can I edit it and change this to 25? And save as a new action?

I'd like to play with this stuff - I'd probably get sucked into the scripting, too.

Um, PS CS comes with a Drop Shadow Frame. It's in the "Frames" action set.

Highlight the Actions palette, click on the little triangle in a circle, shoose Load Actions... Frames

It not *exactly* what I want but it may do.

OK, I figured out #1. This is just a start, maybe to give someone a heads up on how to do it. But if you find it useful go ahead and use it. You can download two frame actions if you RIGHT CLICK and "Save Link Target As..." (http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/MyFrames.atn) Save it to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Presets\Photoshop Actions and then you need to highlight the Actions palette, click on the little triangle-in-a-circle and choose Load Actions and choose MyFrames.atn

On the second one choose your foreground color for the thin line, and background color for the framing, and run it.


Edit: These actions could be improved, especially the first, though it seems to work for me. But they do one size only. You can duplicate them and re-record a sub-action if you don't like the sizes I chose, or expand the action and turn on the Dialog Boxes so you can enter the settings you want every time.
