View Full Version : Cost of Dropping 100-400L = Approx $17.00 per inch.

For those of you who remember the single most spectacular example of my stupidity, I have delivered the lens to the Canon Service Center in Irvine. They have a minimum flat rate for repairing that lens---$299.00 plus any necessary parts, and another $10.00 to ship it back to me. I estimate the camera actually fell approximately a foot and a half, so that works out to $17.17 per inch.
For those not familiar with the story, I had the lens in the back seat of my pickup. When I opened the door, it rolled out and landed on the pavement. The autofocus and zoom still work, but the manual focus ring no longer turns.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
(Just so you know....I'm not looking for agreement here; I want sympathy.)

Well, think of it this way - if you dropped a 50 mm f/1.8, you'd be paying about $30 per inch for a replacement, figuring the lens is about 2 1/2 inches tall and costs $75 including shipping. So, dropping "L" glass is more economic.
I guess I need another lens. :)

You don't have my sympathy, but that poor lens does. :)
OK, OK...you have my sympathy too.

I remember that post, and still feel the pain man, I still have the nightmares of seeing it in my dreams, and cringe at the sound of metal hitting concrete.. It happens and I am sure it wont happen again to you. good luck on the lens, I hope they have the "baby" back better than ever.
A moment of silence please.....

Actually, I do have to add my sympathy - I also remember the original post and while I enjoy the levity, I do understand the financial consequences of these kinds of things. I hope that it comes back better than new!

If you only got it back today then it sure did take a long time to get fixed???
You have my sympathy

No, I actually just dropped it off today. It's a two hour drive from here, and It's taken this long to work up my enthusiasm for making the trip. According to the young woman at Canon, the actual repairs will take from 7-10 working days. Incidentally, the repairs have to be paid in advance.
I've been procrastinating due to not having an actual need for the lens (I have another one at my disposal)

Belmondo, were you able to calculate the coefficient of elasticity of the bouncing object?
Normally, the physics lab students would do that with a rubber ball, not a camera lens. We tried not to mix the optical experiment with the rubber ball experiment.

I'm sure Canon will have it all fixed up and working good as new. And now, when you sell it, you can say it's been "factory refurbished" and charge more.
Seriously, I do feel the heart stopping moment that you must have had when it happened.

Tom,
I remember it very well. As I recall, in the heat of the moment you were so delerious you were seeing things (a Mirage, no?).
Well, thankfully, you got past it without going to the roof with an AK-47.
It won't be long, and then you'll have the best pair of autofocus binoculars in town :!:

How many Canon Digital Photography forum membes does it take to burn a man's house to the ground?
51 - 1 to start the fire and 50 to take pictures!

I remember your original post Tom
Even now when i hear about it i still think -
"AHHHH....must-poke-toes-under-lens-before-it-hits-----" going over and over in my mind :) :) :)
Odd that it easily (?) came in under the minimum repair cost ,i wonder how much needed replacing?
Thinking further i guess even a small repair entails a complete check of alignment

I put it down to one of those "now I wish I hadn't just done that" moments that most of us have scattered through our lives.
I saw it last year on the face of our four year old. Despite having been told that BBQ's are hot he had to find out for himself and when he had finished screaming you could see it cross his mind "Now I wish I had not done that".

Yep. That results in a list of "$hit not to ever do again". I have a long one.

Yup, this was definitely one of those moments. I guess you're never too old to learn things, and I can safely say I will never - repeat, NEVER - leave a lens on the floor of the back seat again. $300 is a very strong incentive to help me remember.

Another way to look at it: the lens was unscathed the first 17 inches of its fall. All the damage occurred during the last inch.

Which would costs more to repair, a broken L lens or a broken toe? :D I think I know which one would make most board members cry more.

Sorry Tiv - not quite right
If you have an eighteen inch drop, you may safely drop it the whole eighteen inches without damge. It's what comes after the eighteen inches what counts!
