Anyone having flash fill problems?

I have a friend that has a G1 (I think) and he has daytime flash-fill problems. While I don't own the camera, I'm curious if anyone else has this problem. Apparently he gets gross over-exposure on the subject, oddly enough only at high-noon bright conditions. My friend, while not an expert, is fairly adept at cameras so I'm reasonably sure he doesn't have a setting set incorrectly. Anyone else have this problem?
