View Full Version : Canon's Replacement for 10D

I have been reading a lot of threads on this board and the general consensus seems to be that Canon will be replacing the 10D to counter the release of the Nikon D70.

Realizing that no one has a crystal ball and Canon seems to have perfected delayed release dates :o , does anyone have somewhat of an educated guess when this might happen? 3 months, 6 months, a year?

I plan on buying a Canon DSLR sometime in the next several months and would hate to buy the 10D only to find that a few weeks later the replacement was announced.

Thanks,

Tim

Replacements? Whether it's a car, computer, or photo gear, there's ALWAYS going to be a replacement or upgrade. If the shoe fits, buy it and don't look back.

Actually it would be, don't look forward. :)

The best guess that I have heard is that Canon will have a big product announcement to coincide with Photokina, which happens in October. There could be an announcement sooner (like they did with the Drebel), but whatever they announce at Photokina will probably be it until the end of the year so they can get ready for Christmas.

My evolution in digital cameras :
2001 : Ixus 300
2003 : Powershot G3
2005 : 10D replacement :D

For dRebel and 10D owners, my take is not to treat the DSLR body as the investment...it is the upgradeable component that someone will buy from you on eBay...plan on changing it out every 1.5-2 years until the technology stabilizes or the sensor becomes a full-frame, which will be a while. Someone once called D30-D60-10D-?? owners part of a 'camera-of-the-month' club.
Treat the lenses as your investment, and don't miss out on taking pictures now by always waiting for the next model.

My wish list for the 10D replacement...
- USB2; however, this is not an issue if you have a USB2 card reader
- spot metering, but no biggie.
- multi-spot metering
- electronic safeties for careless users like me (auto shutoff if lens or memory card is being removed)
- maybe remove that useless built-in flash and pass the savings on to consumer via a rebate voucher to buy an EX flash. :D

I have been reading a lot of threads on this board and the general consensus seems to be that Canon will be replacing the 10D to counter the release of the Nikon D70.

The D70 was not aimed at the 10D, it was pitched against the Rebel/300D. I don't think it has been secret that Canon will replace/upgrade the 10D this fall and that has been the 'informed' opinion of most for the last three or so months, well before the announcement of the D70.

I think an upgraded 300D will probably appear at around the same time or even earlier, which will be to counter the D70. A new 10D fits above a 300D and below a 1D MK-II, which gives Canon a lot of room to play with the specifications. My guess is they will stick with a 1.6 CMOS but use the new Digic processors as per the MK-II (probably limited). It has to be seen as a step up from a new 300D, not a cheaper version of the 1D MK-II.

All very confusing, but who cares. I have a packed diary using the equipment I have.

I would seriously recommend using this forum's search option.

Photokina is September 28, 2004 this year. So you should hear something by end of August 2004. You know Nikon is going to announce something big then, so expect Canon to up the ante with a 10D replacement. Just my thoughts. No education in this guess. 8)

There IS an inteligent answer to this-and some have allready said it

Photokina if at all.
If you need one before then just buy it.
If you can comfortably wait 'till then ,wait and get the latest
there is little worse than buying a DSLR just before it is discontinued :x :P

Thank you for your responses. I was unaware of Photokina, that would make sense as a time to announce something. My time frame will put me pretty close to then so I may just wait. Who knows, maybe I'll pickup a 100-400L and attach it to my EOS-IX Lite APS camera and start practicing before then :) .

Thanks again.

Khomeni is dead. You needn't fear him any more.

Your wife is still alive. Be very afraid.

I have no intentions of replacing my dRebel, but when the "replacement" for the 10D comes out, stores are still going to have stocks of 10D's to get rid of... If I can snatch one at the right price, my dRebel would make a great backup.

Exactly. I have spent years one-step-behind on my computer equipment and as a result have saved a lot of money. This is a good strategy. Being a person that always has the newest and best would be great but I can't afford it - atleast my wife won't let me afford it. She hates mac and cheese!

How true. The money we waste wanting to be 'on the cusp' with the latest and greatest can be staggering. I recently bought a PC. I had my choice of the 3.0GHz P4 or the 3.2GHz variant. The difference was hundreds of dollars. Needless to say, I bought the 3.0 GHz processor.

Being 'just behind the curve' is really smart. Those of us who jumped on the Mk II bandwagon, recognize that for a very brief period, we'll be the select few owners of the best camera of its type. This distingction will last for a distressingly short time---maybe less than a year. After that, one of two things is likely to happen; the 1D MkII will get cheaper, and/or a better camera will come along.

Ahhhh. The circle of life.

Yeah Tom, but looking at the MkII, I can't imagine wanting much more in a camera. That is one hell of a device...... I'm sure there will be a better/faster/cheaper one coming in a year or two but the MkII is a great enough camera to keep you happy for a long time.

Hello:

If you wait for the next latest and greatest body, you'll never get a new body. It's kind of a great way to keep from spending your money on silly things like cameras! :P

I also developed the discipline to not switch systems simply because a competitor (Nikon), comes out with the next best body. They always catch up to each other. Canon anyway, still has the best glass (in my opinion)!

KennyG ... I just bought a new 10D which has the latest firmware as well as a Digic processor and PicBridge. Is this a different Digic processor then the MK II or has the 10D be upgraded since initially brought to market?.....

I have heard others say that the 10D didn't come with the Digic processor..

All canon Digitals have DIGIC,even the cheapest digicams.-Still,the later ones could be better

I too have been waiting to see what's next from Canon. I have been watching this site and many others. I have a Nikon 5700 because at the time I needed a camera no one had the EOS D60. The 10D followed and I sat by the way side unhappy with my 5700. Then came the D-rebel with a better price(but less features). I'm not ready to spring for a Mark II but my best guess for Canon to knock Nikon D70 out is for the 10D replacement to have its 8MP sensor & Digic2 processor. :D
I'll be the first on the waiting list if this happens. Alot of posts on this site say - just get something, why wait? I'm about to drop anywhere from $1000-$2500 on a body alone. I want the best new model at that time.
