I was doing a shoot using the 16-35L today with my month old mkI lens and at one end of the focus range I was getting an odd rough graunching. It went away later but wonder if this is usual with newer lenses or a sign of problems?

May not be related but the last time I read of someone 'reporting' such noise was forcing the manual focus ring to turn when switched to AF and it was not an FTM (full time manual) lens.
If it were mine and the above is not what you were doing to such a lens I would want it changed for a fresh out of the box copy.

I was switching between AF and MF so it may have been as you suggested. I'll check it out in the morning - thanks for the ideas! :)

Hmmm! I surmise that the odd event of slight forcing in AF will not affect the mechanism but anything more forcefull like the instance I describe for me would be a real downer, afterall the fact that it makes the noise is telling me something & I was horrified when I read the story I mention on another forum because the 'poster' was saying how he kept rotating the ring and how very noisy and hard it was to get it to rotate ??? If I recall when I and others advised him/her of the error of their ways they said "oh its in the return period....I will just send it back......for another copy" Aghhhh!!!!

I was under the impression that this lens is designed to let you MF when in AF, ie, tweak the focus when in AF?

Lenses with that function are refered to as having FTM (full time manual focus) ~ I would have thought it shows that in the spec and the manual if it is one of those types.
Hmm! FredMiranda review spec say FTM, so were it my lens I would get it replaced or Canon serviced asap.

Back to the shop then. Hmm, maybe get them to replace it with the mkII version anyway :)

Lemme know how that goes. If you do get the MkII, please post up some stuff, with the 5D...really wide. Anything that's distant. I'd appreciate it...or even a link to some pics with a 5D and the 16-35L MkII.
Otherwise, sucks about your dilemma, but I would suggest what BB suggested...and take it back. Lots of money spent...needs to be an excellent copy.
