Here is your chance to say: "Been there, done that." Out this AM handholding the 500/4 (sometimes with a 1.4x as well.) Shutter speeds were 250 and lower. Looking at the results, I noticed that the % of keepers was lower than usual. Too early in the AM to blame it on shooting through hot air. Finally checked the lens and I had it set on IS mode 2, not mode 1. No, I wasn't panning anything. Hmmm..... Did really make a difference.

We've all done it, or will do it, at some point in time. That, along with forgetting to change our iso from the previous shoot, EC, and the like. Seeing as how the last time I used my 100-400 was at the NHRA Winternationals, I am now going to make sure and check my IS switch !

Hi Gene,

At the start of each birding sortie, when I've assembled all my gear, I do a "pre-flight" check as a matter of SOP on all my settings and switches, including the following:

- MLU deactivation (the worst sound one can hear when shooting a rare bird is that of the mirror going up and staying there)....
- ISO
- IS switches
- focus limiter
- RAW setting
- AF point activated
- AF mode (one shot or AI servo)
- reformat all cards inside each camera
- battery level
- blow dust away from my front elements

HI Romy. Yes, I teach all my students to do such a check as you mention. Doesn't mean the teacher always does it, like he should.
