Hi all, new to the group here. and made a big purchase today. I got tired of putting it off, even though it is a bunch of money. Anyway I ordered a Canon 10D today from newegg.com today. It was $1499.00 with an instant $20 rebate, no shipping charges & no sales tax. Hopefully it will be here by Friday.

congrads - and welcome to the club.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. My 10D has transformed my photography interest in a very positive way!

Originally I was a Minolta man. I have an 800SI, Maxxum 7000, and 6 or so lenses for it. I recently purchased a used Elan 7 & a Canon 135mm 2.8 lens with soft focus control. I plan on buying a 28-135 / 3.5-4.5 lens in the future. What lenses do you guys recommend?

Thanks,
Scot

Well, for starters, the 50 mm f/1.8 is quite good and inexpensive. If you have a flair for spending and like wide angle, the 17-40 f/4.0 is very nice.

Congrats. Got my 10D back in February. You won't be sorry. It will take sometime to get use to taking pictures with the camera so don't be upset if the first 50 pictures don't turn out as you hoped. They will with practice.

I second the recommendation on getting the 17-40 F4 L. The lens spends most of the time on my camera.

You won't be disappointed. You may be broke before it's over, but you won't be disappointed. :)

Ahh..who needs food anyway?

Yup, you'll love the 10D. I upgraded from a D60, and thought the perks were worth it. I agree that the 28-135 IS is the logical first choice. Then it depends on what you shoot - lots of tight indoor spaces and or panoramas the 17-40L or the 16-35 L makes sense. If you like shooting birds, cars, sports, then think about the 70-200L IS or the 100-400L IS.

Have fun!

Hi and well done! Buying my 10D last May literally changed my life. I had my first paid pictures published (in a music tech mag) last December and every time I use my 10D, despite what it cost, I'm so glad I took the plunge and bought it.

Here's hoping you have as much fun as I have! :D

I'm nearly there....going for the 10D that is. (Still love my G1...) My problem is selecting the appropriate lens(es). Can anyone offer advice on a worthwhile starter lens that will give some flexibility? What have you all equipped yourselves with? Read elsewhere in the forum that the lenses are the real investment. I want some telephoto capability. My non-digital camera is a Nikon F101 with an 85-210mm Tokina and a 28-58mm Nikon.
I like that selection.
Ideas?

Excuse my ingorance but what is the "17-40 F4 L" mentioned in several posts?

The 17-40 F4 L is a Canon L(uxury) series lens that has a F4 maximum aperture. It was developed to give digital cameras that have a crop factor, such as the Canon 10d's 1.6, a wide-angle option. It also was developed as a lens for the budget conscience buyer. Using a F4 lens instead of F2.8 greatly reduced the cost. In short it is a great lens that is cheaper than the other great lenses in the L series but at a slight cost of reduced low light capability and increased depth of field during portrait shots.
