Still kicking myself for leaving the flash bouncer at home...

All canon gear: Xti (manual mode F11, 1/200, ISO 100) + 1.4 teleconverter + 25mm extension tube + 100mm macro lens. MR-14EX set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC. Minimal post processing. Sugar water on a fig leaf = instant macro studio -just add ants ;)

very good shots, I dont think I have ever managed that much detail on an ant - maybe these are a bit bigger than our British tiddlers. I also note they are really black unlike our 'black' ants which are more dark brown. They look quite elegant as befits an Italian!

We have at least 4 different species of ants out at the farm and of them this is the largest. At twice life size I couldn't get most of them completely in the image frame (11mm frame at 2x).

Hiya DT,

Excellent series of shots, that's got to be some of the best Ant shots I've seen, great stuff.

Cheers for now
Mark

Fantastic detail - well done.
How to you set up lenses, which is attached to the camera body, the tube or the converter?

Well, with Canon's 100mm you have to use a tube to connect it to a Canon TC -unless you like the sound of glass against glass ;)

Several people have told me that you get more magnification and better image quality if the TC is connected to the camera, then add the tubes and lens.

With a 1.4 TC and a 25mm extension tube I'm getting almost 2x (1.96x to be exact). The working distance (from the front of the lens glass to the subject) is about 5.3 inches (13.5 CM) -I actually took the time to set everything up on the living room table and measure it out.

Dalantech,
Thanks for the info - I have a similar problem with the EF-S 60 but didn't know if it work with the tube first.

Dalantech,
Thanks for the info - I have a similar problem with the EF-S 60 but didn't know if it work with the tube first.

It should work, but I don't remember if I used it with a 12mm tube. If you try it go really slow...

some tc dont work with the EF-S so put the tubes after the tc ,so camera, tc, tubes, lens will work

Nice shots, and neat idea to put sugared water on the leaf to occupy them.

Excellent series of Ant shots, plenty of nice detail in them. The last shot is the best, really like the angle in the shot and composition :) Lighting is good as well.
