Ok, so I have played around with some raw photos - not sure if I did too much or not enough so I batched them into a jpeg. Now I am wanting to close out of DPP and a screen comes up that ask me "image was edited, do you want to save? What happens if i say yes? What happens if I say no? I don't want to change the raw image, but I don't want to reset the image either. I hope this makes sense.

If you say no then nothing happens, if you say yes it will give you the option to save as jpeg or tiff but doesnt allow you to save as raw, you can never rewrite over your original raw file, just save the processed raw image under another format.

That's not quite right, with DPP at least.

When closing the program, it will ask for each image you have adjusted whether to save or not.

Saying NO, means you lose all your edits... next time you open DPP, all changes are lost.

Saying YES, means those changes are written to the RAW file itself (only as instructions, so it is still non-destructive.) Next time you open DPP, those changes will be visible. You still can revert to shot-settings just fine, as I said, non-destructive.

Canon is the only software (that I know of) that can read those instructions and apply them... any other converter just ignores those new instructions and displays images as it normally would.

It has nothing to do with the jpegs or tiffs that you batched out.

Yes, Canon actually does write to the RAW file... to test for yourself, make the edits then save changes when exiting... then examine file size and date.

There is also a third alternative. Before exiting the folder or closing DPP you can, from the edit menu, save the recipes as separate files that are stored along side the RAW or in another folder if you so wish - I have a Recipes folder - and then answer no when asked if you want to save. The next time you open that RAW it will initially have the "as shot" settings, but you can load the recipe and restore all your editing.

I had a hope that in DPP 3, there will be an option to save the changes automatically into a recipe file without having to do it manually. I know it is very useful to save the changes into the raw file itself automatically (there is an option for that) but I'm afraid it will be a risk of incompatibility with other raw converters in the futur...
