I have the opportunity to buy a four month old 1ds for $5500. Given what most of the research done by the people getting the Mark, Should I do that or wait until the MarkII becomes more available?
Thanks

To answer this you should list your requirements in detail. Even one requirement like "I need full frame" can be of course decisive.
For example:
Do you need fast speed?
Do you need full frame or is 1.3X ok?
Do you do a lot of flash work?
Do you work in high ISO?
Do you need extreme data security (two mirrored cards)
Do you need 11mp?
The image quality difference is not very big in terms of resolution: see 1Ds

That's a heck of a price for a 1DS. As to how it will stack up against its replacement, nobody outside the hallowed halls of Canon can answer that. As to its suitability for your purposes, that depends on what you plan to use it for. If you're doing a lot of sports photography, for example, you might be better off with the 1D MkII for less money.

I'm curious about that border around the 1ds image.
I've seen a load of images from this camera and usually there is border around all 4 edges.
top and bottom frame 10x4064 pixels = 40,640 pixels
left and right frame 10x2684 pixels + 26,840 pixels
total = 67,480 pixels
Is this taken into account when they say its 11mp???

What border are you talking about? (couldn't see it myself)

I think I understand resolution so how can 8 megs be about the same as 11 megs?
