I use PSCS for individual conversions and Canon FVU for batch conversions, the reason being that with PSCS, I have to see how the conversion looks before I commit to it. I don't trust it enough to mass convert all my images like I do with FVU. But that's just me.

I hope you don't mind,. but I could not pass up the "POLL" oportunity :)

...unfortunately,. I don't think we have an option for multiple answers in one vote..

I actually bounce around from PSCS, PS7.01, and Capture 1 in no specific order.

Capture 1 is first on my list followed by PSCS.

CDS, just out of curiousity, why do you bounce between PSCS and PS7 when PSCS provides the same functionalities (and then some) as PS7, no? Or is it because you're working on two different machines? I have both PSCS and PS7 installed on my machine but I've never gone back to PS7 after installing PSCS.

i personnaly use Capture one. however i would be curious to know if there is any difference in quality between a PSCS and capture one pro post processing

Before I got Photoshop CS I was using Capture One LE, but with PS CS it's so easy that I'm now using that all the time.

Two reasons really,.. One you allready nailed.. a second machine that is not "XP"

The second reason... when PSCS was giving me a hassle about re-activation because of changes I was making in my Hard drive set -up... I understood that there was a limited amount of times that I could re-register without a hassle from Adobe.. so I simply stopped using PSCS untill I got my system worked out...

Also,. once i got PSCS installed the second time, I was so sick and tired of reinstalling actions, plug ins etc.. that I simply used PS7 untill I finally took the time to get PSCS "tweeked" for the second time in a month!

As it is,. I only really use PS7 now on the other computers

CDS, thanks for the reply.

PSCS with its new registration policy can really be a big hassle, can't it? That's the reason I haven't loaded it onto my laptop yet. I anticipate upgrading my desktop in the very near future and I don't want the hassle of calling Adobe customer support and trying to explain to that I want to install PSCS on a new machine that is replacing the old one.

I'm trying to move to Linux, but the whole digital camera thing is holding me up a bit. I'm a registered user of BreezeBrowser and C1Rebel on Windows.

I've tried dcraw for raw conversion and it's OK, and even works as a Gimp plugin, but there's no preview, so it's a bit fiddly. I've managed to get BreezeBrowser working under Linux so I'm using that now.

Incidentally Photoshop 7 works perfectly under Linux. C1Rebel doesn't work yet.

A couple of us here lately have been running extensive comparisons between C1 and PS CS quality.

C1 is my favourite because of colour rendition, especially for skin. However, it's been shown to have a few problems with detail in very saturated colours at higher ISO's. This is rare, but does happen (see my thread here somewhere about C1 Dithering problem).

PS CS is my second favourite. However, we have noticed that it is slightly noisier than C1. The most disturbing finding however is this weird "cross-hatch" noise pattern that PS CS produces on most images. This is the main reason PS CS isn't our number 1 converter when it comes to quality.

You get RAW-conversion as a Gimp-2 plugin now, using dcraw as it's backend. Installed it today, and it works quite good :) Never used BreezeBrowser, but I found the Gimp-way to be quite comparable to photoshop's. Although I would love to see the histogram when doing the conversion. This is probably a issue corrected shortly by the plugin-writer (or other, as there's several of gimp-dcraw-frontens popping up). The quality should be on par with photoshop/breezebrowser I think, as the dcraw-author states on his page that (among very many others), Adobe Photoshop and BreezeBrowser are two of the products which use the dcraw-code for it's raw-conversion. Now let's pray someone can do a comparable Gimp-preview for dcraw as those commercial tools have managed :)

(BTW: I did 2-3 days straight of Gimp-training when Gimp-2.0 hit the "shelfs" and have dropped photoshop completely now. Now that raw-conversion finally have arrived, all I miss is preview for USM. That is not worth $1000, and rebooting to windows for me ;))

I use C1Rebel, BreezeBrowser AND PS CS ACR 2. Why ? Because C1Rebel doesn´t work with S50 RAW Files, and BB anc ACR2 allows me to do different things with S50 RAW files :)
I also use BB for the DRebel RAW files sometimes, mostly for some high ISO ones, because the C1 noise reduction is too agressive with color information.
Despite all of the avobe, I voted for C1 (it´s the most used)

If I had been able to, I'd have voter for both PSCS and C1LE. I use them both depending on whether I'm at home on the PC, or on the road with one of the laptops. I voted for PSCS because I use it a lot more. I wouldn't want to give up either one, though.

I have never used PS for RAW conversion. I used to use BB and loved it for it's ease and support. However, I recently moved to C1 and it is utterly fabulous! Quick and intuitive.

Hello:

After weeks of on and off testing, I started using "with vigor" (this week), Phase One software to run our D60 and eventually MkII raw files. Although it's a bit clunky and not as efficient from a workflow-standpoint as CS, the differences in the files this software produces are worth every workflow challenge. The images are virtually noiseless with lots of shadow detail without image flattening. I can resup a D60 file on the fly to spread-size, achieving a file that is virtually indistinguishable from the native D60 file. I can't wait to play with the Phase One software and the MkII!

Thanks

About reactivation --

A good experience with Adobe.

In my PC transition, I blew up a hard drive which had the PS CS upgrade download, and serial number. I didn't have it anyplace else. ("DOH" emoticon)

I also had already activated PS CS twice.

I called them up, and explained the situation. They gave me another download, and reissued a serial number.

Its not as bad as everyone thinks. These guys are pretty helpful, and not at all inflexible.
