This game was between Cashel and Tralee ( Kerry ) a Hieneken Junior Division clash. Took this one from the touchline, during this event which always produces good chances for a shot or two. Used the !ds MK2, 100-400.. think F.5.6 or around that.

Hi ei5jf
Good shot, but I think there is to much to look at in the pic, I would crop just right of the hooker in the red team and tight to the lifters in the white team. I find the closer you are to the action in lineouts the more dramatic it is, this is one of mine.

Alan, also I see u used f6.3 that gives u to much dof, shoot a low an aperture as u have to blur the background to make the player stand out. use manual.

Thanks, I left the background in because the Club name and Sponsor were in it. I do like the crop though.

Point taken, see from your EXIF u shot in auto, would u not try manual and have more control over the settings, the setting for that pic are ok, I just like to shoot in manual,

Thanks for the replies and comments.. You are of course correct about isolating the background and getting in close. I am limited by the Canon 100-400 f4 - 5.6 I am looking to get a 2.8 300m lens,, saving as I speak.. !
So have to do with the equipment I have at present.
Regards
Andy:)

I agree it makes it more interesting to see the lifters with it shot more vertical for isolation. Borderfox's shot seems about perfect and the others seem to be bit tight or overcropped.

Hi Gary, yes agree with what you say , these comments I made were April last year, I like both type of lineout shots tight and lifters, the sports editor I shoot for in the local rag likes tight lineout shots, is all up to the individual choice
This is what he likes me to shoot for him.

Those are great shots. Now granted I don't watch rugby often, but I find it odd in these lineout (?) shots to crop through the arms and heads of the lifters only showing the guy (is he called something?) going up for the ball. It's one of those true team efforts that looks odd cropping it that way to me. I could see these types of crops more if they were jumping on their own power.
You're right though, everyone sees things different and when you're shooting for someone else like a client it's what they want to see.

You are quite correct in what you say, taken in the prospective of people who are not familiar with rugby, maybe he is selling to rugby educated people, who knows;) It keeps him sweet
They are just called lineout jumpers usually #4&5
You are making me think should I be shooting this type of shot more often

I find this crop much more interesting and visually appealing even when shot from this angle..
