RIGHT! That's it! If this was yachting or cricket or whatever, this equipment would be declared illegal, it's so d@mn good! So, what lens, Warren, for the first shots of the birds? The only bird shots I ever tried with my humble 70-200 and 1.4TC were abject failures. I've got to read the manual on the correct focus setting.... What I also needed was for the bird to hover in a stationary position, held aloft by gale-force winds while I framed the shot. Maybe that's what you did of course! Do tell!

Thanks Tony, thanks also for coming out. Was a great afternoon ;)

Thanks, the light was a bit odd. It's actually from street lights on the cliff about 500metres away!

Cheers Adam.

Heh, thanks Iain.
It's shot with my Sigma 120-300, which is one of the VERY sharpest lens out there, even beats many Canon L lens for sharpness. But it's a beast. Very heavy, so difficult at first to get good results when it's sooo heavy. - Also no IS unlike Tony's 300mm 2.8 IS he just bought.

This shot was 1/2000th to freeze it nicely, F3.2 (partial stop from wide open - yet still sharp, shows this lens is great even wide open - which I've done many times successfully)

As for the finer details, I user AI Servo mode now for EVERYTHING. Including the 6 weddings I've shot in the past 2 months.
(http://warrenwilliams.co.nz/blog) for what I've done.

So I use AI Servo, and * for focus (CF-04)
Centre point focus only.

I hold the * button, focus on the eyes of the subject, let go, recompose the shot, and fire the shutter - 99.9% of shots are in focus. A couple I sometimes misfocus on the background, but generally everything is spot on, as sharp as a 50mm 1.4 prime you'd expect (also what I shoot with mostly)

I hope this helps somewhat. :)

Brilliant! This is exactly what I need to know. I continue to be impressed by your work, which has a natural flair and 'ease' about it. Nothing appears manufactured. I believe it's called talent. Take a bow! And thanks for taking the time to reveal some tricks of the trade.

Thanks for the fantastic words. A great way to start the week.
Seriously, always keep to teach people new tricks - should see the number of questions coming from Tony. :p

Fantastic,. the fourth shot is just amazing!

Thanks Jake. Was thinking of just posting #4. The others kinda make the average lower. Simplicity at it's best. If only there was a lighthouse too.
