Great efforts All. There are a few new faces here, our warmest welcomes for joining our weekly challenge. Here're some of my comments which are only my humble thoughts on your lovely photographs.

* = forgot to put title in the subject title

ph.viny - The cristal ball of revelation
Interesting reflection and side lighting of the crystal ball. I think this would have more impact in B&W.

vvilko - Re: POTN G-series Speed Challenge #115 - Minimalism
A close-up of the rubberbands? Thanks for sharing. Wrong camera and image size.*

Margie - Reproduction in nature
I enjoy the colours of this flora - Perfect match of the colour wheel. Nice composition as well. The focus image is a bit too soft here.

Kapeji - Minimalist Thread
A bit of thinking went behind this image. I enjoy the clever use of the simple elements and their placements. Good shot!

AndreyD - Hand made creature
Got to love that DOF! I enjoy the colour and the great craftmanship. I used enjoy making elephant myself. Cheers for the reminder.

mistergibbon - minimalilly...
What a painting! Very nice edit skill in B/W also. My wife would love this image on our wall. I wonder where the light source came from?

Gary W. Graley - Re: POTN G-series Speed Challenge #115 - Minimalism
Great depth of field. Though the background is a bit distractive for me, I enjoy seeing the textures of the pins and the foam.*

KC Jewel - Lone Kite
This image makes me wanting to go out and get a kite to fly again. The model I made myself in Laos was out of newspaper, bamboo sticks and rice as a glue. Cheers KC.

Maureen Souza - Re: POTN G-series Speed Challenge #115 - Minimalism
It's still puzzling me what were in the pool and what was the boy doing Maureen!?! Great lighting and exposure on this one.*

labbai - A Touch
A touch, a little ripple - this is one of images I was hoping to see. Showing less for more. Excellent captured of visual colours and simple but power mood.

teekay - Abandoned Pioneer House
Excellent crop and well captured image! Every element here seems to enhance each other. Breath taking shot.

_OC_ - Venus
Lovely angle of light source and detailed texture on this image. Wondered what is she thinking about?

Master-9 - Re: POTN G-series Speed Challenge #115 - Minimalism
Great control of lighting on a rather difficult shiny bottle. I enjoyed the tonal range of this B/W image. Though the background seems to be a bit busy.*

marie - ' the use of fewest and barest essentials' : The Hard Hat
A different dimension of minimalism indeed. Though it's not what I had in mind to see, I love the creativity behind this image. Can I borrow the manequin for lighting practice?

andrewaaa5 - yearly & monthly
Great duotone conversion on this image by andrewaaa5. The door and windows seem to be mini compare to the clock. I couldn't work out the title though.

BottomBracket - Sky And Building #53
Top notch framing on this image there. With almost monchromatic conversion really makes the image pop. Top contender.

rowdyred94 - The Basics
How basic is this! We all need to do our business right?!? Spot-on exposure and great captured of the moment.

sara - The writing's on the....fridge
I like the simple framing of this shot. Though like a moth, my eyes were attracted to the bright light. What are the words for?

abat - Yellow wall & sign
This last shot immediately grabs my attention. I love the simple play of the elements and its compostion. The shadow of the sign is just as an icing on cake to me. Can I see the colour version too?

The winners are:
abat - Yellow wall & sign (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3088620#post3088620)
labbai - A Touch (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3074856#post3074856)
teekay - Abandoned Pioneer House (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3079679#post3079679)

Top contenders:
Kapeji - Minimalist Thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3061172#post3061172)

Congrats to the winners, who supplied some very enjoyable shots.

teekay

Thanks for third place and congratulations to the top two!

This was a most interesting subject which also produced some excellent shots on the "small compact" forum challenge recently, because it forces people to think about composition and the essentials.

I would have had a hard time judging this one, and your taking time to make kind but constructive remarks about each photo is appreciated, I'm sure.

I, too, was wondering about the title of andrewaaa5's really excellent photo - what did we miss?

Congratulations for those in the winners circle, and to John (Boutty) for hosting a challenge that drew a lot of entries! I enjoyed the takes on the theme and picked Labbai's or Teekay's photos to win but Abat's entry is a worthy winner in itself.

Thanks for putting me in honorable mention. About my title, it's just a number that I plucked out of thin air nothing special about it :)

andrewaaa5

well done everyone. bags of entries. some great pics here, and it seems 'mono' is back in fashion. 'minimalism' is a tough subject. I always assumed minimalism was a style of living, and decor.

I, too, was wondering about the title of andrewaaa5's photo - what did we miss?

yep, not sure what the title means myself, but lets not worry, they are only words ;) just something to do with time (the big clock)

i quite liked the photos from vvilko, very pastel and abstract,
and the entry from Kapeji was stunning. simple and effective...

...oh and i also posted another picture originally, but withdrew it almost immediately. not sure if you seen it boutty (time difference) but here it is ( title: "Monday > Thursday > Zzzzday" )

Boutty, this was a great challenge!

Congratulations abat, labbai, and teekay

Interesting and beautiful entries everyone!

Congratulations to andrewaaa5, BottomBracket and Maureen Souza for their pictures selected for the POTN Book of this year. Great to see participants of theses challenges selected in a top-level contest.

Do you know of other participants of these challenges with photos selected for the POTN Book? Let us know!.

I hope to return to the challenges soon.
Regards.

Congratulations labbai, teekay and everyone for some wonderful photography and to Boutty for a wonderful topic. In fact all the topics over the past few weeks have been fantastic. I entered on the spur of the moment last night - and certainly didn't expect a placing - let alone to win. So thanks Boutty.

The shot was from a stroll around the city where I work a few weeks back that yielded half a dozen shots I really like - funny how some moments are particularly productive. Prior to that I had been having a bit of a photographic "block".

Will post a challenge soon......

Here's the colour one.

:)

Congratulations to the winner Abat
(love both versions)

#2 Labbai

#3 Teekay

I love the winning shot and the choices picked for the placings

all of the pictures are very good and interesting

Thank you very much John for the difficult task of judging and for all the comments

the shot I posted was not really what was the obvious requested but just another dimension
as there were so many aspects of the theme I could not decide which of a few I had in mind

the one I posted reminds me of how I cringe inside when I see some kids wearing hard hats and riding their bicycles precariously, the parents misconception being that their lives are not in danger once a hard hat is worn.......
the model wore a hard hat because it is necessary on a building site, but the rest of her apparel is useless in a situation when and if an accident happens
she shows almost every other part of her body got whacked

what I mean is, unless a child or adult behaves with care and attention a hard hat is useless.
it may protect the head, but to be under the illusion it will protect someone who then behaves irratically (as children on bicycles sometimes do) is spelling disaster
great care has to be taken in situations like cycling
wearing a hard hat will not stop an accident happening.
it is only part of a safety measure and children have to be aware of that.

whoever left the 'model' there like that in the city on a building site shows a good humoured demonstation of a very serious issue

Congratulations again to everyone

Congratulations abat, labbai, and teekay!

Labbai's shot was my favourite, When I first saw it I thought it really captured the theme, not to take anything from Abat or Teekay though, great images well thought out.
Delighted to be in contention too!! :)

Congrats to abat, labbai and teekay. Loved all 3 shots.

The words in my shot Boutty, are simply magnets on the fridge. They are fun to move around and make funny sentences out of!

Looking forward to the next challenge.

I'm with rpolitsr.. congrats to BottomBracket, Maureen Souza and andrewaaa5 for getting into the POTN Book. I didn't know enough about this and missed out on entering images. Next time...

Minimalism was quite an ambiguous title, and some really great postings from it, I was wondering Boutty what kind of images that you had in mind when you originally posted the topic. It would be "super-great" if you could post 1 or 2 examples from your personal collection of such images that you had in mind (it is up to you of course, but it is always nice to see great shots from yourself)

In response to Andrewaaa5, take a look at the descriptions of minimalism posted by Jeece in a recent challenge on the "Compact" forum. I found it most helpful in showing that minimalism is well defined rather than an ambiguous term.

Thanks for the great challenge John, I think it produced some really good entries. Congratulations to the winners. I particularly enjoyed the photographs submitted by Kapeji, G2, and BottomBracket.

Thanks too for the individual comments on everyone's entries. I learned a number of things during this challenge (i) Lily has only got two L's - I learned this one too late  and (ii) there's more than one way to convert a photo to B&W, and it's a tricky business!

In answer to your (possibly rhetorical) question John, the light source was my living-room light (11W powersaving), and the picture was shot hand-held with ISO 400.

Thanks to those who liked my photo with the silly name :) I actually planned to take a picture of coffee beans spilled over a jute sack and call it "Spilled The Beans" but never got around to it.

Thanks Teekay for providing that link, it seems that our small camera brothers have a lot of talent as well.

rpolitsr, sara, thanks for mentioning the POTN book! Congratulations too to Maureen and andrewaa for getting in as well. I consider myself very lucky to have pictures picked for the book, and I am extremely proud to say that one of my pics was taken with a G-series camera :)

Thanks and yes, interesting challenge! I had that photo of pins, I had a title and a
fellow forum member PM'd me but I misunderstood his PM and removed my title
not realizing it was to be in the subject, duh, oh well, next time :)

I had just unwrapped two shirts and there were a ton of pins, so instead of letting them
float on our table, I stuck them into a piece of foam for safe keeping and then liked
the looks of it from table view, almost like armless people or robots of some kind
in looking back, I should have retaken the shot for this challenge as I would remove
the distracking background and made it all dark or something like that, might just
do that anyways as how often do you get a ton of pins in one spot all the time :)

Thank you everyone for taking the time to give us the feedbacks and posted more inspiring images - cheers abat and andrewaaa5, they both look awesome. Through these, I think, we can learn about other's thoughts and techniques. ;)

Cheers teekay for extraordinary inputs and linking us to our neighbouring contest; there were some great shots there too. I actually got this contest idea from this pbase CTF Challenge (http://www.pbase.com/ctfchallenge/c65_minimalism) and it's proven that most of us were probrably enjoyed it.

Also thanks rpolitsr, please do not forget to join us!?!, for the headups on the POTN book - Congratulations to Maureen, BottomBracket, and andrewaa - you did us proud! :p

andrewaaa5, for your request, my version of minimalism photo - I think it probrably won't stand a chance in this challenge:-

Shall we catch up in abat's challenge?

G2, I thought your photo was pretty cool. It's always great to see a G-series shot with shallow DOF. Did you use Macro mode?

Thanks, and yes, macro mode hand held, what do is to set the custom
self timer to 1 second so when I press the shutter button it then waits
the 1 second before taking the image, allowing me time to hold the camera
steady. Otherwise the motion of pressing the shutter can show up in
the photo as a blurred image, works very well.

Thanks for the feedback! I took the shot when rowing on a lake Alakitka on a hot summer day. It was a very calm and windless day with a cloudless sky and some +29 celsius... A really hot summer day and quite rare one up here in Finland.:D
G5 is a great camera on a boat trip, when you don't want to carry any heavy load with you... It's a great camera on any trip.
