I've just bought the 70-200 2.8 IS(2nd hand), but the user guide is missing.Could somebody please explain what the difference is between Stabilizer Mode 1 and 2 and when each should be used. I'll be using the lens for sport most of the time.
Many thanks in advance.

Mode 1 is normal shooting, Mode 2 is for panning. Shooting sports, you might be better off just turning the IS off, since your shutter speeds will likely be high enough to stop action and therefore shake as well. IS will only slow you down if that's the case since it has to "settle" before you take the shot.

that is correct. mode 2 only uses IS on one axis which makes it ideal for panning where the mode 1 uses the IS for up and down as well as side to side which is great for normal shooting.

I wish there was a mode 3, the "hover" mode...so I don't break my back everytime I take this out for a ride!
