I am new to SLR photography and just purchased DRebel about 2 weeks ago. I have been doing a lot of research and just purchased the following items from B&H! Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

P.S.: I think B&H just got Canon 50mm f/1.8 because I have been checking it for every 30 minutes and they didn't have it about an hour ago! if you were waiting for this lens, go for it now!.

Well I don’t have any of the items on your list so I can’t comment on your choices. I do want to say “congratulations” though. New toys are always fun! :D

The 50mm f/1.8 is an awesome lens for the price, I use mine alot. Be sure and get UV filters for all your lenses, to protect them from scratches.

if you could; you should try to exchange the tripod. 4 lbs sounds like enough for a drebel, but in the future you may want to add a battery pack and external flash. then the tripod becomes bobbly. also you may want to change heads, ie. ball head. your tripod has a fixed head.

may i suggest a sunpak 757 or 777. available at b&h

Thanks for all your suggestions! I looked at those tripods and they were a little too expensive for me at this point.... I ordered this because it has a nice handle to carry around. plus it was very cheap and light.:) I know I will probably upgrade my tripod later and sell this on Ebay.

I have a question though. when would I want to change the head?

Thanks for your help!

The "Head" is the part at the top of the tripod that has the pan and tilt functions.. essentially any adjutment of angle and movement.

You can upgrade or replace just the head on most quality tripods to suit your needs.

For sorting this sort of thing out al the description and photos in the world won't equal a trip to a decent camera shop that has some good tripods on disply...

There are different heads that do different tasks,. but there are also a host of different designs the accomplish the same exact thing.. they just do it in various ways. The only way you will be able to figure out hwat type you prefer is to get your hands on them

Congrats to your new toys! I'm new to SLR too, got my DRebel a month ago. Just bought a small camera bag, UV filter and 256MB card yesterday. Went to a ballroom dance contest today and finally got to really try it out. :) Got some pretty decent shots out of the day, will try and post next week.

While not an L lens, the Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM is not a bad lens. I photographed some Cardinals and other birds in my back yard with this lens and got good results (it's a borrowed lens). I also took it camping last weekend and also got good results. I had to make sure that my shutter speed was fast enough when I was all the way at 300mm (or 480mm w/ the 1.6 multiplier) to ensure in-focus pictures.

I've been very pleased with my 300D and I'm sure you will be too.

:D

Out of all the items I have bought for my Camera, Nothing beats the overal improvement per photo a good flash makes. I spent 2 days trying different flashes that were way cheaper than a 420ex flash. I had purchased some cheapo VIVITaR ones etc they all sucked, after going back and forth to camera shops I just decided to pay the price for a 420ex. I got it at bhphoto for 169.99 i believe. BUT WOW what a difference it made on my photos.

I went to Ritz camera to take a look at the tripods with interchangable heads, but they didn't have it. They said those tripods with interchangable heads are high-end tripods and they don't carry them. Well, so I just picked up two UV filters and one circular polarized filter. I also picked up the lens cleaning kit but I don't know how good it is. what would be the best solution to clean the lens? I read somewhere on the web says do not use the lens tissue that comes with the kit. I have the eye glasses cleaning cloth. will this work on my camera lens? if not, what would you recommend?

Thanks guys~
