300D auto-focus problem

Hi Folks,
I have had my 300D for 6 months and today all of a sudden the auto-focus stopped working ( i.e. still moves the lenses but the non-focus light shows and shutter button won't work). The instruction manual is not much help, it just says if the auto-focus does not work use manual focus.
Has anybody else struck this problem? ( the manual focus is working fine but the 300D will go back to the shop on Monday.)

Have you tried another lens ?
Are the contact clean ?

Test it in bright light with a high-contrast subject.

I had this happen after switching between manual and auto focus several times with my 300D/50mm 1.8. I turned the camera off, took off the lens, replaced the lens, turned camera back on -- it works fine now. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies - unfortunately it is the same result with all three lenses: 18-55mm, 75-300mm and 50mm.
At least it is still under warranty but I hate the prospect of being without the 300D while it is sent away to be checked/repaired.

Yep, I had the same problem , in the end i got a new camera out of the company that sold it to me. I did not trust it to happen again so as it was under 6 months they replaced it for me. Thats the route i would take again[b]

What mode is the camera in? (Tv, Av, etc.)

How awful! When you change your lenses, do you always power off first? (I'm not sure if leaving the power on during lens changing is bad or neutral...maybe someone else can answer that.)

I took the 300D back to shop on Monday morning (26 April) and got it back from Canon this morning (29 April). They said they had dismantled it to refit a dislodged mirror pivot - so after 8000 photos taken since last October it seems as good as new - Canon had also cleaned the viewfinder No charge, still under warranty.

I was using it on P setting when the AF stopped working.

I always switch off the camera when changing lenses.
