I shoot in RAW and if I understand what you are saying is that you would like to view smaller thumbnails images in Aperture, so you can select your top picks faster. Yes, you can view RAW images and adjust the Thumbnail Resize Slider to change the size of the thumbnail in the browser in Aperture; however, you do not need to change them to jpeg format before doing so. There are numerous tools such as: Light Table, Smart Album, Ratings, Keywords, and etc. that can be used to help you choose which photos are your top picks. A good way of choosing your top picks is applying a rating of five stars out five and then creating a Smart Album within a Project and setting it so only the five star images appear in this album.
