TV/Video connection problems?

Hi everyone,
I cannot for the life of me, get an image on my television screen when I connect my EOS 10D. I've checked the obvious; Plugs in securely, camera set to PAL (here in the U.K).
Can anyone help me out here?

I had this problem using a triple plug (yellow, red, white). I kept trying the yellow plug for the video signal like I did on everything else and it wouldn't work. I finally tried one of the other plugs and it worked fine. I think the camera is made for a single video cable (since it has no sound) and when you use a 'stereo' plug the contacts inside the camera don't always connect where the video out portion is on the plug, but on one of the audio portions of the plug.

If you are using a double or triple plug, try all the plugs from the camera into the tv and see if that helps.

The lead I have came with the camera, and it's just the single plug with a yellow single pin socket at both ends.

And what is the TV source set to? Did you remember to set it to Video as opposed to the usual Tuner?

I just bought a G5, and am brand new to this forum. I have also been unable to successfully view my pictures on my television. Before seeing this string, I tried multiple possible ways of connecting: to my t.v., to my VCR, to my DirecTV receiver. The cord that comes with the G5 is a double plug, yellow and black. After seeing this string, I tried to connect the black plug to the t.v., and to the DirecTV receiver. Still, nothing. I know my setup is complicated with t.v., VCR, DirecTV, DVD player. But this can't be so uncommon. I am dumbfounded as to why it's proving so difficult to see pictures on my t.v. I plan to call Canon technical support. But I suspect the problem lies in my configuration of all the varioius devices, so I doubt Canon will have an easy answer. Anyone have any other thoughts? All input welcome. Thank you.

The cord that comes with the G5 is a double plug, yellow and black. After seeing this string, I tried to connect the black plug to the t.v., and to the DirecTV receiver. Still, nothing.

The yellow plug is the video output & the black is audio (on the G-series; DSLRs have yellow only)

Yes, I know the yellow is video. I was trying what someone in this string suggested. Unless I misunderstood it?

I called Canon support today. They had me verify that my G5 is set to NSTC for the video system, not PAL. (NTSC is the U.S. Standard). They also told me to check the same thing on my Sony t.v.. Haven't done that yet, but can't imagine it's not set to NTSC.

Canon also suggested trying it with TV set to a channel other than 3, e..g 4, 5 etc. I was skeptical but I tried it. No luck.

I'll try to plug my G5 into a different t.v. to rule out a problem with the camera or cable. But that seems highly unlikely.

My next step is probably to call Sony.

To everyone that had a go at answering my thread. Basically what I did, was to connect the yellow plug, as supplied with the camera to the appropriate socket on the video/TV. Turn the power supply on to the video, switched the camera on, and began flicking through the corresponding channels on the video recorder, whilst having the tv set to the appropriate channel to watch a video. Low and behold up on the screen appeared the photographic images which I'd taken the previous day.
Not sure if I've explained this connection procedure properly, but hopefully it'll make sense to other users?

Not sure I follow your explanation. I think you mean connect the camera to the t.v. in the normal way, as the manual says. Then, in addition, turn on the VCR and change channels on the VCR. Is that what you meant? That didn't work for me. Very frustrating!

With the TV and VCR on, I connected the camera to the VCR. The VCR is normally set to channel 3. I changed to channel 2, and then went down one more "channel". The VCR is then set to "line" (not sure what that means exactly, it's not a numerical channel) Then my pics displayed. While I'd prefer to be able to plug into the TV (front plug, easier access), this works just fine. What a relief.

Generally speaking, once you plug the camera into your TV, you have to set the right source on the TV.

The TV usually has lots of tuner based channels, but will also have some direct sources. On my Sony TV, these are called AV1, AV2 and AV3. AV1 and AV2 come from connections on the back of the TV and I have a DVD and video player plugged into these.

But the front panel of the TV has a drop down flap with composite inputs. Here is where I plug in the cable from the camera, but I have to select the direct source AV3 on the TV to get anything.

OK, so how do you "select the direct source AV3 on the TV?" You explanation makes sense. I always figured it was just a matter of telling the TV to use the video input from the front panel. But I have no idea how to do that. Does one need to go to some hidden settings menu on the TV? (I have a Sony VEGA) Toggle some switch in the back?

Sony WEGA ? Right, it'll be similar to my TV then. Lets hope the following helps

On the remote for your TV, you will have a button that has a picture that looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing into it. This is the direct source button. Pressing it repeatably ususally cycles through the available sources, e.g. on my TV it goes: AV1, RGB, AV2, AV3 then back to AV1 again.

I hope that helps and I hope they actually have these buttons on your remote.

Failing that, find the manual for the TV and look through that to find how to switch to front panels input.

Of course, make sure the camera is plugged in and switched on before you start. ;)

Thanks for the tip. Well, I couldn't find such a button on my WEGA remote. Perhaps AV is a UK convention? Anyway, I looked up how to connect a camcorder to the TV in my WEGA manual. Oddly, there was no mention of how to change video inputs to make the TV accept the signal from the front input. But I noticed the diagram showed "video 2." So I went to the on-screen menu, selected "setup", then "video label." Video 2 had been set to "skip." Toggling that setting to "video 2" did the trick! So I'm finally able to view pics on the TV without having to use the VCR.
