I think it's OK, unless you're from Nigeria? :D I've seen one case where several guys were hired for the same type of shoots in different city's. Other times someone will post, "Anyone live in... that can shoot..."
Post it so we can see it.

OK... here is the scoop.
I have been writing and photographing for many of the top fishing and outdoor publications for some time now. I have launched a new media company and am in the proecss of hiring some of the best editors, graphic designers and marketers around for my series of publications.
I am now in need of a few, established, outdoor photographers/writers who would like to travel and have good contacts with everything related to Sportfishing, Hunting, and other outdoor activities.
Note: these are not how to publications. These are high end lifestyle publications that rely on the best of the best in writing and photography.
Thanks,
Danny

Is it a common practice to be both the photographer and writer?

This post confuses me.
Sounds like on one side you say you're contracted to write for some already established publications, and then you're saying you started some new magazines and need people to do all the work for you...?
Please clarify. I'm not very intelligent at 11PM EST.

What's confusing about that? He's been writing and photographing for others. Now he's launching his own publications. So, he needs people to write and photograph for him. Seems perfectly logical to me.
And yes, I do think its normal for people to write and photograph. I do sports and I see a mixture. The larger publications in the area will send out a writer and photographer to the larger games. The smaller publications will only send a photographer, who would have to also capture the details to write the story. The larger publications will also do that for games of lesser importance. I assume other genres are the same.
What's missing, I think, is some of the other details about where they'd be traveling, what kind of pictures/stories would be needed, full time/part time, compensation, etc.

I've done multiple jobs where I did all the photography, and written the articles for the magazine. But most of the time I do the photography only. It really depends on the magazine, your written skills and knowledge of the subject matter. You get paid more for doing both which is always nice.
From my experiences, it seems to be a common practice..

Is it a common practice to be both the photographer and writer? Just 'cause one of my majors was English didn't change the fact that I'm a visually oriented person. My experience is that I'm not a writer & most writers I've worked with weren't photographers, either. (Though most thought they were.)
The big advantage of being both is the scheduling. Writers can interview over the phone if they need to, while we must be there. They tend to forget that point.
Two examples:
The guy who called me Sunday AM & said we have to be there for a pipeline river crossing Monday AM. 200 miles away. Reality was that they started at noon & the actual crossing wasn't 'till Wednesday PM.
Then another one scheduled a shoot of a guy who grew orchids. Problem was that he'd had a show the previous weekend & had forced the blooms. Four stinkin' 1/2" blooms were left for me to shoot.
Then there was the guy... :D

You have to understand that I being a little vague b/c I really don't want to release to much info about this yet. I hate even discussing it publicly but feel somewhat comfortable here.
I am looking to hire 4 full or almost full time photographers/writers.
Editorial individuals fit into these categories
1. There are select groups of people who are very good writers and very good photographers.
2. There are numerous good writers that are no good at photography
3. There are many very good photographers who also know how to take extremely good notes and can tell a story with there photos
I would like #1 but would be fine with #3.
Writing can be done at the end of a trip. That is what on staff creative writers are for.
In a nutshell:
I need 4 very creative photographers who can either write or can take extremely good notes. These individuals need to be able to travel up to 8 weeks out of the year to locations all over the globe. These individuals will also need to have a great general understanding of sportfishing, hunting and the general outdoors.

I suggest we keep this thread for general information & that anyone interested contact Dan by PM. Otherwise this thread will become cluttered quickly.

Yes, I agree with the previous post.
Quite a few individuals have contacted me and that is fine. Please be patient with me as what I have brought to light here is just one small facet of the much bigger picture of what I am designing.
I asked the question for nothing more that to ask if it was OK for me to use this forum to make contact with individuals.
I appreciate the answer.
Thanks,
Danny
