EF-500 Super + 430EX

Hi Gang,

Can I use a Sigma Super EF-500 as a master and a 430EX as a slave in Auto mode?

Some people have tried using Canon Speedlites as slaves to the Sigma Super in wireless E-TTL mode, with mixed results. Just based on the anecdotes I have read, it can work but not very reliably. Neither Canon nor Sigma guarantee their units to play nice with the other.

But, the optical slave on the Sigma Super works great. So you could put the 430EX on the hotshoe in manual mode and use the Sigma as slave. You won't have E-TTL control, but it will be a reliable setup.

I've thought of buying a used 550EX but they sell more than the 430EX new.

And rightfully so, reconsider.

I got a sima super and have no problem using a 430ex in slave mode. Took me a minute or to figure out how to put on the same channel, after that it was easy.
