View Full Version : IXUS 400 - avi clips - Morgan Multimedia

Hi all,

Had my IXUS400 for quite a while now, love it to bits. My one gripe though is the avi clips it produces. Not sure of the technicalities of it all, but I guess there is some codec in these clips that's to do with Morgan Multimedia, cos everytime i go to play one i get an annoying pop-up saying my Morgan Multimedia trial period has expired and i need to go buy a license.
I presume this is common with all of them (??). Is it a simpe case of either buying the license from MM or putting up with the annoying pop-ups?
Or is there any other way to sort it out without buying the license?
I just find it really frustrating that Canon would force this upon us!
thanks
Steve

What OS are you using ?

The M-JPEG AVI's that the IXUS 400 produces work fine with stock Win2K and Media Player 9. No need for extra codecs such as Morgan.

I'm running XP Home, media player 9.0
So bizarre then, was wondering why there was a lack of responses to my post, but I guess all is fine for everyone else.
Thanks for replying, I guess there's not much more you can say. I'm doomed

Why don't you just choose to open AVI's with Quicktime instead...or Windows Media...since they are both free...

Go to www.microsoft.com and download the lastest codecs update WM9Codecs.exe and see if that helps.

I've now tried with Quicktime, WMP9, Real Player & DivX Player, and they all do the same thing.

I downloaded the latest codecs update WM9Codecs.exe, no difference!

I am at a loss here, I really dont understand why this seems to be only happening to me!!

thanks for trying though guys
Steve

If you still get a message from Morgan Multimedia, I would suggest you uninstall whatever you have installed from them, so you'll be rid of it.

I few years ago I played with trying to convert video (not recorded with the camera) into a format that the camera would read if I uploaded the vid to it.

I came across "Morgan Multimedia" codec and downloaded something and installed it. I remember this being a trial. In the end it was of no use for what I was trying to do so I uninstalled it.

I can only think that you've downloaded it along with something else, or without realising. You should have no problems if you uninstall it...

Have you tried any of the free adware/spyware detection programs?

If it is a Morgan Codec, have a look here for more info about it. http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/

It could be their Jpeg2000 Codec that has expired.

It sounds like you have some simple sypware/adware/spam/whateveryouwanttocallit that has installed itself on your PC.

Either that or you have a copy of morgan multimedia install, and you need to uninstall it.

The later is easier to get rid of than the former, but both shouldn't take to much work.

How am i suppose to do that?

I don't find morgan multimedia on my computer, could it be on with an other name?

I think you have something from Morgan on your computer.

How it got there is open to debate, but its clearly there.

Forget about how it got there though, instead you need to work out what it is, and how to get rid of it.

I agree with that, and that's why i'm working on it for weeks but i can't find a solution.

If you have an idea ...

With out sitting down in front of your PC its very very hard.

But, I would start by doing a good google search, usualy these problems are not unique, and others will have found a solution. Iv got rid of quite a bit of adware, malware etc with a good search and bit of time.

Also check what process are running in Task Manager, any you are unsure of can be checked with a google search, and of course look out for process that start and stop for no apprent reason.

And of course make sure you have some good anti virus software, a good firewall, and some good anti spyware software.
I use Norton and SpyBot which have worked well together so far.

Of course how much you can do is ultimatly limited by how far your technical PC knowledge extends. At which point you either have to have a friend who can sit down in front of your PC and have a look, or you have to pay someone to do it.
If you can't do either of those then a disk format and complete re-install will solve the problem.

Thank's for you're answer.

I did most of what you said and that's why i'm desparate.

I've norton for antivirus and Ad-awre Se for spyware. The process running with this popup it's googledesktopcrawl.exe.
I looked on the internet and i found nothing, that's why i'm asking on different forums to find somebody who had the same problem but until now it didn't work.

A friend of mine who work in computer came and tried to solve my problem but he failed.

The only thing i didn't do it's to re-install but i have to say that i'm not really excited about that. So ... I'll keep trying to find an other solution.

Thanks anyway for your answers...

If you heard something about that kind of thing, please let me know.

Thanks

Well popping googledesktopcrawl.exe in google gives some interesting results, and should be a good place to start :)

I know it's late :)

But you should search for the codec and related files, which are probably m3jpeg, m3jpegenc, and m3jpegdec or something similar. Search for just "m3jpeg", should throw up the other 2 files too, should be in c:\windows\system32.

To delete these files, you'll have to start windows in safe mode, preferably with command prompt ( dos )

That should work, I think.
