Nope, not really.
That's about what I would expect for f1.8. The further you are to the subject, the better the lens performs. With my copy, the sharpness seems to "kick in" at that aperture.
Nice shot BTW.:D

man, this is a special lens. quirks or not.
And THAT is the take-home point. It truly is a special lens. Always has been. From the RF lens to the FL, FD and now the EF. Canon has had a winning formula for this lens that dates back decades.

No site yet, this is a brand new project for them. They've both done a ton of stuffe before tho... Oliver Ravn (the one with the glasses) can be found here (http://www.myspace.com/oliverravn)
. The other half of the duo, DJ Nage used to be a part of a trio called "Hvid Sjokolade" (White choccolate). Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUbYBmSIP8w&feature=related) is one of their tracks. He doesn't rap, but all the beats, sound bites etc. are his work.
Sorry for OT'ing, here's another 50L shot:

Thanks! Sadly (because that is what I love the most - I get bored with photographing landscapes pretty quickly) no. We were in the outbacks visiting various national parks. It was a fantastic vacation but I'd love to go to a big city like NY some day to photograph. My fiancι isn't into photography though and doesn't like big cities, but he wants me to be happy, so we'll see. :)
(I want to add that I wouldn't like living in a big city at all - just photographing it. :) )

lovely shots in this thread. I'm looking for a fast prime. Seems 1.2 is the fastest I can get so there are two options. But the 85mm is a bit long imo.
Then only 50mm is left. It seems the 35mm is the better buy. (no focus shift) but that's only 1.4 and for head shots it's not that pleasing!
The only thing holding me back is the focus shift! it seems that when you hold to f 1.2 there is not problem... but when stopping down there is.. the only reason to get this lens for me is to use it at 1.2 so there doesn't seem to be a problem.
But then again. it costs alot of money... maybe I d better get the 35mm afterall?

Certainly wasn't me.
Now granted, it might not be 135L or 85L sharp. The 35L is a touch softer, as is the 24L. But it's a matter of splitting hairs, really. They're all sharp enough wide open. People craving all this "sharpness" shouldn't be shooting wide open and/or complaining about it. ;)
Once again, I'll state for the record; I love my 50L.
GMCPhotographics
14th of October 2009 (Wed), 16:30
I guess it really depends on your specific lens. My 35L is noticably sharper than my 50L, but a wee bit softer than my 85L
Sure my 50L is softer, but it's still very usable wide open. I'd call it "sharp enough".
For head and shoulders portraits, the 85L is better, but for context portraits, the 35l and 50l do well

What you wrote about your 35L and 50L applies to my lenses too. 35L is pretty sharp wide open. 50L somewhat less, but "sharp enough" as you put it. It's my favorite lens and I don't hesitate to use it at f/1.2, but if I want super sharp at MFD I simply stop down a bit since mine doesn't have a noticable focus shift. (Away from MFD it is very sharp at all apertures.) 24LII is razor sharp at f/1.4, easily my sharpest lens, especially for close objects. 24L and 50L is a wonderful combo. :)

Believe it or not, I spent the entire day reading this thread from page 1 to page 95. OMG, I'm blown away by all of the great pictures and the open dialogue (I won't expect anything more). My elementary question is this, are the colors and contrasts as vibrate as I'm seeing in the photos naturally or are they being adjusted using some other photography app? I'm simply wondering how much post processing work am I witnessing?

Yes. Amazing in both departments with very little, if any, pp'ing required. I generally only need to do some sharpening. It isn't the sharpest lens out there but it makes up for it in other ways.

Agreed. As long as you get the exposure right, the 50L produces great shots straight out of the camera.

I've used it on a 400D and 40D, before getting the 5D and 5D II if that is of any help.
And yes, the clarity, bokeh and colour is very much the same. Flare resistance is second to none. You really have to try very hard to get flare :D. Do note that AF may be more of a hit-and-miss with anything prior to a 50D, even with a well-behaved specimen - sometimes the AF on a 40D or 400D in combination with a 50L misses focus completely, in 1 of 10 to 1 of 20 shots IME. You may find Ai Servo fixes this, most of the time anyway.
Of course, on FF it shines even more. It is in a class of its own on FF, where on APS-C, IMO, it is similar to the 85L, just different AoV.
I find that lately when I want to do (fairly static) macro, I grab the 50L with an extension tube, or two, rather than a macro lens, because of its rendering capabilities. It is the main reason why I sold my 100 macro recently.
Kind regards, Wim

It's kinda odd how I see so many people with the 50L when I've read so many posts about 50L's shift focusing problem... what's going on? I am planning to purchase one, but fear very much towards this issue. Can some one speak more about it? Should I take the plunge?

It's because it's a very real but over rated issue. But it's still the best autofocus 50mm ever made.

So... can some one tell me if I were to purchase this lens... what's the % of it having the shift focusing problem? I am getting ready to purchase it, but would hate to spend that much and finding out that it has that issue. Can anyone here verify that they do not have such an issue? And I am still new but I would like to know how do you tell if it's shift focusing b/c I never experience such problem. Pls ans my question as it's a do or die for me right now. And I need your replies to get an accurate decision ='[

I thought I'd do a quick check on mine this afternoon, even though I've never noticed it. So I focussed on a pen at 45 degree to me about 2 - 2.5 feet away. Set f2.8 and used the center point. All the scenarios that should bring out the shift.......... and it did. The true focus point was about 1/4 inch back from the nib that I was focusing on......... Noticeable in real life? Not for the kind of stuff I do and easily worked around anyway. May have been worse on a full frame or even a newer cropo, but on my 30D its fine. @YaYa-Bossie - Though I work mainly in B + W, the 50L has some special colour. Can't put my finger on it, richness? depth? ..... I don't know, but I love it on my 30 Sorry, can't seem to format this post

IMO, there is no better 50 mm lens for Canon bodies. So if it is do or die, IMO it is do.
Focus shift varies significantly from specimen to specimen, and a lot has been written on this topic here, including by myself. One can argue that it is always present, but may disappear within DoF with good specimens, or is prominentky present and not fixable by Canon, so it seems, with other specimens.
Generally, newer bodies like the 50D and 5D II, and likely the 7D and 1D Mk IV, will handle it better, due to improvements in the AF algorithms and AF systems. When you do encounter it, it varies from a relatively mild form of focus shift between apertures F/1.4 and F/2.8 at focusing distances between MFD and approximateley 5 or 6 ft, or 1.5 to 1.8 m. Essentially it will backfocus slightly, in those cases, probably up to about 2 to 4 cm (0.8 to 1.6 inch), varying with aperture from a few mm to a few cm IOW. Beyond a certain distance and/or a certain aperture the back focus will disappear in the DoF. With worse specimens it will only disappear at F/8, or sometimes never, apparently.
It does look like Canon produces specimens this year which are on average better than before, but even so, there is a chance that yiu get a bad one. Just make sure you get yours from a retailer with a good return policy, and return any not so good specimens until you obtain one that performs satisfactorily or well enough for you in the above mentioned "danger zone".
Personally I went through 5 specimens and 2 recalibrations, to keep the last one, which is fine and only shifts well within the limits of the AF system (shift of 1/6 of DoF at its most, at F/2, which is less than the focus shift my 85L II displays :D). This was a few years ago by now, and your chance of getting a good one is a lot better now, IMO. It is worth it, however, if you'd ask me :D. The pictures in this thread speak for themselves, after all :D.
HTH, kind regards,
Wim

Hmm if I had the ability to get this lens i would with no doubt, because I just love the rendering of colors from it and overall view angle :) But to pay for a lens this much (more than 1000 pounds) and not being able to use it properly because of the lack of skill is a different story...
So for me it is: first skill (being able to control F1.4) and than if needed this lens :)
Someday it will definitely make its way into my camera bag!

Well although growing into lens is fun...but for me it is a bit too much growing at once :D I hear even pro photographers say that it has a learning curve...so i'm just saving for siggy 30 1.4 (i have a crop, and the FoV will be very similar to 50).
As i said, for me who has never used a lens that is faster than 2.8, first should come the understanding of what to expect of the lens like this, how to use it properly and just don't want write everything down as lens error just because i don't have the proper skill to focus correctly :/
That signature is so true, i thought that i have read it somewhere :) Kinda makes one actually appreciate what one has :D

The only reason I joined this forum is specifically for this thread. It has made me suffer a LOT, yet it bring me a great joy at the end. I have been mumbling about this lens for almost 2 months and I just can't stop thinking about it. I always ended up coming back to this thread everyday at work just to see those beautiful pictures that you guys posted here.
As I believe some people here might experienced the same problem as me (affraid of backfocusing issue and can't justify the price difference, but still loving the pictures that it can take), I decided to make that step and I finally bought it last week at my local area cam shop. This lens, on my 5DII, is the sweetest thing I ever had in this world (okay, I exaggerate a bit). But seriously, this lens really shine!!! The sweet color and contrast, amazing bokeh, 3D effect, everything is so real and superb!
The focus shift problem is there, I tried 2 copies and I took the one that doesn't have the shift problem. It does not need any micro adjustment on my 5DII and the picture is sharp. I did compare it with 85L II but my heart fell for this one. I am so happy now, I believe the lens will stay for quite sometime in the body and I shall post some pictures very soon.
this is such an evil thread, yet it brings you joy =D
