I am in need of a second lens. I can certainly afford this, but at its price, is it even worth considering one compared to Canon's other 50mm choices? Is it that much of a difference?

I think the only 50mm (with AF) you can compare to the 50L is the 50 1.4 from Sigma.

I have to say though, it might not be practical at all on your rebel. It will positively dwarf the camera lol. It's a hefty lens for sure.

Please excuse the less than exciting subject matter, I just picked up the lens today and I was so excited! I missed this lens so much!
I find that this new copy (UX date code) focuses much better than the old copy (UV date code) that I used to have, which I thought worked well back then!
Anyways, I stopped by my dad's office to help him try to organize some old files and I had my 5D with me.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2513/4123970740_55f2a69428_o.jpg
This is up-close obviously and hand-held, I wanted to test out the bokeh separation effect caused at f/1.2 and close-range. Focus was on the calculator between the 9 and the 6. I'm pretty happy with it so far, cant wait to really use it!
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2493/4123201059_c1c5265dbf_o.jpg
Also, this one was out in the parking lot, my dad's car. ISO 50, f/1.2 (less than ideal, but worked none-the-less) The only thing I noticed was the somewhat nervous bokeh in the background bushes, otherwise everything else was buttery smooth. Focus was on the audi logo.
I'll be taking more photos for sure (obviously) but I just want to show that the lens (especially newer ones) is just awesome!

The 50L is a terrible, terrible lens for shooting test charts. If you make a living shooting those, get another lens.
For anything else though... best lens I have ever owned.

Those results look similar to what I experience, good at 1.2/1.4/1.8, ridiculous at f4. Great bokeh, lots of CA. I would say mine behaved better I think due in part to using it on a 1.3 cropper.
Still though, it's a great lens but it does have its shortcomings.

I agree with parts of the review, but I also know that they are just stating their observations, L lens or not.
They did still say that it's limitations are what drives certain users for creative effects, and I agree with that statement.
I personally am absolutely happy with what this lens allows me to do in low light. It's absolutely usable wide-open, and that's what I care about. I do see some CA, but certainly not an unbearable amount.
I've used the lens a whole lot on 1.3x cameras and it was just flat out awesome. I'm now using it on my 5DmkII and I'm equally as happy, I havent tried it out much on my 40D yet, but I am to do that pretty soon.
I hope to buy another 1DmkIII again, preferably sooner rather than later.

Very nice capture
Canon's cameras seem to overexpose reds very easily, especially slightly older cameras like the 350D and 5D.
Personally I have never noticed this, and I don't think it happens with newer cameras.
And your reds show very, very nice gradations, different tonal intensities. Very nice indeed.

I spent a lot of time debunking the 100L rumors not too long ago. Even bashing the poorly photochopped images that turned out to be the official canon press kit.
I do a lot of shutting up now, when it comes to rumors.

The 100L rumors were far more regular than 50L's are.. A 50L upgrade doesn't get mentioned very much.

Wow, a house in Leica ... It fits my style perfectly, but I really need the detail in ISO 2500. Until that occurs (and a price drop or two), I don't think it would be right for me.

Because many of us are foolhardy enough to overcome its limitations, and enjoy what it really can do in the areas where it excels? :D
I think soem of us understand that despite any flaws this lens may have, this lens makes things possible no othe rlens can, and then renders i tin a way no other lens can.
Do note that this lens actually gives a 3D look to many of the photographs taken with it, at any aperture. This is what makes it very attractive, I think.
Kind regards, Wim

You bring up a very valid point Wim, yes it does have some flaws, but I find it easy enough to work around.
If you think back to old manual focus lenses that had exceptionally fast apertures, a lot of them had a similar design internally to what the 50L has. (IE: no floating element) for decades past, photographers have been using lenses and producing stellar images with them. I find it sad personally to see that today all we do is complain about one flaw or another. For example: http://www.kareldonk.com/karel/ is the most negative blog I've ever read, I just had to stop and leave the page because all he does is complain about everything. Such a waste.
I love what my 50L enables me to do, it's a tool, and I fully utilize it. Enough said.

Well thank you very much! I appreciate it!
The 50L is amazing. And mine just works for the things I do with it. I like to contextualize, so have some distance between me and the subject (for tighter shots, I would use the 85L). And if you can test before you buy, I highly recommend it!

Yeah...right now I just can't afford it, college student, you know...
But I was thinking about the 50 1.4, just to get the feel of primes and the FL, and then maybe, just maybe, get the 50L.
I know a store near me that has it, so that's even worse to resist, but...oh well...I will keep dreaming!

That is an excellent idea. I am sure you will catch the prime bug too. There is something comforting about shooting with one fixed focal length lens. I makes me anticipate and observe much better.
However, in your case the 50mm will grant a more narrow field of view. I am sure you already know this, but it is something to keep in mind. I have a friend who takes great pictures with a 450D and a 50mm 1.4, but it really is different.

Thanks again guys!
@Marloon: I don't think I have anything to teach, but for my B&W five things are important:
1. Add grain. And lots of it. Why? See point 3.
2. Add vignettes, even if they are subtle.
3. Add midtonecontrast, but make sure that every pixel in your picture has detail. People like high contrast B&W, but soften it in the higlights, extract detail in the blacks (even though it can be very subtle) and add grain to give your picture a texture so that even in those areas with little detail, there is 'something'.
4. Start from a good colored picture. Don't be sloppy when converting: make sure you like it in color first. So white balance *must* be corrected.
5. Stop pixel peeping. The addition of grain is great if you look at a picture as a whole on your screen. Of course it will look less good if you look at the picture at 100%.
That is what I do in terms of processing.

The 3D-ness comes from the lens, I'm sure. The 85L has it too, but I seem to get it more often with the 50L.

Hey Dorman, for me its not avoiding apertures but distances at certain apertures. I shoot at f1.2, f1.8, f2.5, ... But when closer, I rarely shoot wide open.
