I tried it out in the store yesterday....It looked so funny on y body :D Almost as big and probably twice as heavy :D but soooooo solid and the rendition! And the colors! Perfect :) This lens is definitely going to my collection sooner or later :) (or when the price drops :D )
PS: I didn't find the AF slow, it was actually pretty fast :P But the copy that i handled had some backfocus...but it wasn't that bad :)

Well, what they are doing is renovating the Boneyard starting today. Luckily I got my shoot in the very last hour before it closed.

It's being completely revamped to look nicer and eventually open to the public, cause right now all the signs and lights are just placed wherever, and there's plenty of broken glass on the floor. We're gonna miss that old rustic look, so we'll see what they do with it.

Nice Christmas shot, btw!

I just bought the 50mm 1.2L :p

http://img124.yfrog.com/img124/1250/186i.jpg

Because of all the focus shift problems everybody seem to have I made some pix @ about 0.45m > 2m and all where NOT in focus with AF
I also made some in MF and all pix where sharp :)
So I set up my laptop with my AF focus chart and dialed in some microadjustments (till it was as sharp as MF). I had to put it @ -15
Maybe I'll bring the lens to Canon later this week to get it calibrated...

I was surprised too, I was actually looking at the reviews on FM and on the top of the page they have a couple of retailers that have it in stock and they post the price and sears had it on sale( cheaper than newegg!) and when I put it in my cart they said they had another discount on electronics and gave me another 10% off!

Helena

Thank you all very much! It was a gorgeous day, and I wish that I had taken more photos, but someone was waiting for me so I had to be quick. It was -18C (-1F), but no wind, so it wasn't too bad. The river was starting to freeze over.

5D coped with the cold just fine. I have used it before in even colder weather (and also snow) and all that happens is that the battery loses its charge quickly, so you have to keep a couple of extra batteries in a warm pocket. I know I should, but I don't take any precautions such as putting the camera in a plastic bag before going indoors. I just let it sit in the camera bag, and don't turn it on until it has warmed up. So far so good.

Anyone have/had both the sigma 50 and the 50L? I have heard they are comparable, and the almost thousand dollar difference makes it a tough choice.

I've tested 2 Siggies, and 5 50Ls. I own a 50L. Is that enough information for you? :D

Some awesome shots in here!

I'm happy to announce that I can finally start contributing to this thread a little

I only recently got this lens (as a xmas present!), and I took it with me on vacation to try out. Overall, very happy with the results...though I felt it was a little soft at the smaller apertures. Given how the 85L performs as similar apertures I thought it would only get sharper when stopped down...and it didn't feel that way. I am giving it the benefit of the doubt given that I've only just started using this lens and a lot of it may be due to user error. I'm interested to hear what some of you think. I'm not usually close enough to the subject to be able to blame focus-shift.

I should say, though, that when used at apertures less than 2.8, this lens is fantastic!

Here are a few shots I took with this lens while down in Florida last week (yes, it was much colder than I would have liked...even though I'm from Canada).

Unfortunately, I just realized my 50L has that dreaded back focus issue.

When I stop down between f2.8 and 4.0 and shoot up close, it's noticeable. Even between 2.0 and 2.8 I notice that it back focuses just slightly.

I guess there's nothing for me to do about it except remember to shoot at 1.2 whenever I'm up close.

Sorry to hear that! Since the focus shift isn't too bad, try using one of the outer focal points (if you aren't already). I was fortunate and got a 50L that doesn't shift outside of DoF, but a friend has one that does and using the outer points works perfectly for her. I didn't believe it at first, but got to try hers and it really works.

Holy cow, I am getting MUCH better results!! Thank you so much!

I guess I'll have to get used to avoiding the center focus point when I'm up close. Either that or shell out another grand to upgrade from a 5D classic to the mk II for the micro focus adjustment.

What about sending it in to Canon in Irvine? I've read that it might help a little bit.

The focus shift is a design issue, therefore it can not be eliminated. As someone mentioned already, there are copy to copy variations and some have minimal shifting...so minimal that it doesn't go beyond DOF limits. But as you found out already, there are lots of copies with focus shift worse than this.

You can try to send it in to get the shifting minimized. I can tell you that for many of us, it has been a futile effort.

The way the Zeiss renders a scene is different. Hard to describe, it has a more dramatic look. It looks more 3D because of the zeiss microcontrast.
