@agphotography: It's a toss up for me as I really like the 35 ƒ/1.4 on the Mark III, too bad the 35 is in love with chromatic aberration which makes me come back to the 50.
You know I had a similar issue with my 35L on my original mkIII. Those two just didn't play nice. Now the 24L on the other hand was spectacular, but I really enjoy the 50L. It's just been splendid.

Some great shots in this thread. As long as you get a recent, good copy, the 50mm f/1.2 really is the best 50mm option for Canon.
My first copy exhibited some pretty significant focus shift, and so went back to where I purchased it. I then tried several Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lenses, and really liked their bokeh/color rendition, but found the Sigma QC to be abysmal. Each one I tried required anywhere from +15 to +20 micro adjustment to even get close to having accurate autofocus. I thought about going the route of sending to Sigma for calibration, but didn't want to take a chance with them coming back and saying it's in spec (a shame, given the outstanding shots in the Sigma thread). So, I returned the Sigma to the retailer today, and am hanging on to the 50 f/1.2 I also bought last week, as it nails focus perfectly, even at MFD at f/1.2. It's more expensive than the Sigma, but the autofocus is faster and more confident, and I haven't really encountered much of the dreaded focus-shift issue either (it's a UX date code - maybe that helps).

Ok. I tried out 2 lenses today. 50L and 85L (i'm feeling like and idiot because i didn't look if it is I or II). They both looked ridiculous on my rebel.... 50L is as always awesome :) Fast focus, didn't notice any focus shift, very sharp and beautiful colors - even under the light i used it in :)
But OMG the 85! first of all it is enormous! Bigger and heavier than my current kit (lol) - and the focusing is well i don't know if slow really describes it correctly...it took him at least 3 seconds to go from one end to another. But the QUALITY - when i had to give it away, my heart cried, my mind said "What are you doing???!" but my hand didn't listen.... ;(
Here are two images, i wonder if WITHOUT LOOKING IN TO EXIF, you could say which one it is :) (i didn't do anything! )
Both taken at f2

I just got this lens.
This is my first poor attempt to shoot my 3 month old daughter at f/1.2.
The focus is suppose to be on her left eye and I probably missed it because she moves a lot, but I like the result.

First one is 50L, Second is 85L. The difference in background blur gives it out.

I rented a Leica m8.2 with a very old 35mm summilux pre-asph today. Sorry to say guys, but this blows my 50L + 5D mark II combo in the water. When there is enough light, that is. :-)

Hello everybody,
I've seen many stunning photos in this thread, and I am thinking of getting this piece of glass :) but i am wondering , is there a big difference between the 50mm f/1.2 and 50mm f/1.4 ? I have the second one , and want to be sure I would get a real difference in images quality and DOF to buy this one.
Could anyone post two photos taken in same conditions with both lenses @ f1.2 and f1.4, or two photos with the 50f1.2 but with two apertures (1.2 and 1.4)
Thanks :)

Those are 2 different lens mount types. It's not a "Sigmalux." It's a Summilux 50mm 1.4 Leica M-Mount lens and it's not going to work too well on a Canon EOS body.

IMO, this is typical wide open peeping at 100%. Not exactly sharp and not exactly soft, but has that "ghostly" effect to things. You'll notice it especially with black text against lighter BG.
I find that this effect cleans up at around f1.8.
How far were you from the target?

Yeah, I would expect something like that at 3 feet wide open. Definitely. Again, it's not exactly soft and it's not exactly sharp...
Here's a sequence of shots at about 2.5 to 3feet away. All are 100% crops with no sharpening at all at any stage.

Well I suppose that would depend on which type of rangefinder system you're thinking of and also if you're comfortable using them or not already. They surely are different than most people are used to shooting with. (I enjoy them myself)
I love the 50L personally, It just sings on my 5DmkII and is also wonderful on my 1DmkIII.
I wanted to love the sigma, but I just had a bad copy that couldn't be fixed properly to my cameras. If you could for sure find a good one, then having that ultra sweet 135L would not be a bad thing at all ;)

They're two totally different animals, per se'... Beside the aperture they share, the 50L definately has faster focusing speed than my 85L (mk1), obviously... The nice thing, too, is the weathersealing feature... I wish my 35L, 85L, and 135L had that... Nonetheless, I do like the focal length of the 50L... It lands nicely inbetween 35mm & 85mm; not too short, not too long... Especially on my full-framed body (1Ds2)... I still haven't put it on its paces, but that will be forthcoming... No problems with back/front focusing issues that I can detect... Seems to focus fine on the outer points of the focusing grid on both of my 1D-series (that was my main concern)... So far, so good... All is well with the 50L... Hehehheehehe... Hey, that rhymed!!!

Haven't used the 50 in a while since picking up the other member of the ƒ/1.2 brigade. In terms of AF speed the 50 is faster. In terms of sharpness wide open the 85 has it but stopped down I would say the 50 is sharp enough. For shooting directly at a light source the 50 has much better flare control than the 85. This is the first time in a while that I've used the 50 and for what... to take a photo of the 85. lolz.
If you have a moment, help me get listed on Tumblr's directory by clicking this link (http://www.tumblr.com/directory/recommend/photographers/joricel). I really would appreciate it.

KAS
26th of March 2010 (Fri), 13:46
I've never used the 1.4, but from what I've read on the internets, the build quality is sometimes questionable. The FTM, weather sealing, and slightly wider aperture on the 50L make it a no brainer in absolute terms. In terms of cost-vs-benefit, that is up for debate (as we shall soon see)
mofasho
26th of March 2010 (Fri), 13:50
Well, I have had to send the 50 1.4 in for service. One day the AF just crapped out and I had to send it to Canon for repair. You may have a point. Guess I should keep the 1.2L on my wish list...

I favor the 1.2 because it is weather sealed and for the overall build quality. On my camera, this means I am weather sealed (to the extent it can be claimed to be - sealed - ). It may be a placebo thing, but I don't sweat the elements with this lens on my preferred body (1Ds III). On this particular trip we encountered a nasty wind storm and the debris blowing around was intense and sandy. So I felt smug.
I also really love how easy it is to nail shots.
I owned the 1.4 and before it stopped focusing I enjoyed it.
