Tim, did you upgrade from the 1.4 to the 1.2?

I wish. I borrowed a friend's. I really like the contrast and bokeh of this lens. I do wish the AF was as quick and accurate as my 35L!

Autofocus seems pretty quick to me. Maybe a hair slower then other lenses I have but much more accurate then the 50 1.4.

I guess it's all relative. You're right, It's much more accurate than my 50 1.4. I photograph lots of fast-moving kids, so I guess I'm just used to the precision of my 35L and 135L. The 50L is definitely much faster than the 85LII.

Tommydigi

I shoot a lot of kids too and I am still getting my feet wet with the 50L. I find like the 100L if your not going from something really close to far the autofocus is fast enough. I tried the 35L and its a sweet lens but not sure its a focal length I would want in a prime.

Got my 50 1.2 today :D

I took a lot of rubbish with it as you do when you first get a lens but I got to say I thought I would give it some stick and try out a different focusing points and modes at F1.2 and it seems to handle most situations really well.

It will take a while yet and a couple of weddings before I really get to know it but I thought I would post one of the first few images that I got today of my little lad messing around in a Christmas Store, I just love the colours and shape of the bokeh.

Hi guys I am new.

Anyways, I just got my 50mm 1.2 l lens, so I am still learning how to shoot with it.
The lens is much harder to use than my 24-70 2.8 while that one never misses focus and is razor sharp I do sometimes get soft and out of focus pictures with the 50mm 1.2 L lens.

Here are some shots I took with this lens:

After using the lens for more than two weeks I noticed that in some occasions it will pretty much always miss focus.

For example when I am trying to take a portrait shot and am using the outer focus points. Or if I use the zoning auto focus.
Also in low light this lens hunts a lot, maybe more than my 24-70 2.8 L

anyone else got similar issues?

agphotography
15th of November 2010 (Mon), 09:47
On my 5DmkII the hit rate isn't very solid with the outer points when near wide open. I typically stick to the center point with that camera.

My 7D can hit with any point, but I'm still adjusting my primes to that camera.

One question guys, why did you get this Lens?
For me it was because I really like Bokeh, and want to use the lowest Iso possible.
Also, I knew I would want a L lens, since I love my 24-70 2.8 L so much.

Of course I did also have a look at the 85mm 1.2 L , but its a little too long especially on a crop sized sensor like the 7d.It got no weathersealing and its supposed to focus slower, but most importantly would have cost double what I paid for my 50mm 1.2 L.

agphotography
17th of November 2010 (Wed), 19:00
I bought this lens (three separate times now) because I love the 50mm focal length. I've tried all of the readily available 50mm lenses out there (so no f/1.0 or adapted MF lenses) and I came back to the 50L once again after some time with the Zeiss 50.

I love the bokeh of this lens, and for some odd reason I like the challenge of shooting with it. It's definitely not a "point and shoot" kind of lens (Like my 24-70L, that thing just always works) It takes somewhat of a special skill to maximise the potential of this glass. I think there's just something great about that.

Rented a 50/1.2L for my trip to New York. Time to start saving up for new glass. For all the bad rap it gets, the 50L is fun. :)

Precisely! When you just go out and shoot with the darn thing instead of evaluating it's test chart imaging prowess (or lack thereof) you often find that it just becomes another tool of the trade.

The internet has done many a great thing for us to be able to come together and discuss equipment and learn about new gear and what not, but it has also caused us to scrutinize things down to the most finite level and find flaws with just about everything.

What happened to the days where we just took our cameras out to take photos? Sometimes I look at all the gear I have and I get mad at myself for not appreciating it more and not spending more time shooting instead of working on the computer or here on the boards ;)

I think we all need to just go out and shoot. Simple as that.

I'm about to aquire a 50 L 1.2 to see what the big deal is. I've never been a fan of 50mm but, I'm willing to give it a try again. :) Any thoughts before I dive into the world of front/back focusing? ;) :) All joking aside, how is 1.2 compared to the 85 L at 1.2? Thanks! :)

In my totally non-scientific comparison, I think the 50L and 85L are very similar at f1.2, which is to say that the results are amazing. The 50L is a much-maligned lens, but the one I rented for the week is a fine, fine piece of glass and I'll be looking to buy my own copy.

This is a great shot. Question though, where did you focus your focus point? I just bought this lens as well, and I'm getting it tonight :)

Testshot .. I really like the colors of this lens. The colors at night is so great.. Earlier had the nikon d3s and 70-200 VR II.. It couldn´t do these colors. This picture is taken on aperture 2.. I am amazed of the sharpness of this lens too.. Look at the license plate down in the left corner.. I focused on the lamp in the middle of the picture..

This made me wonder. When I got to try the 50L I noticed that WB was different on pictures wich was taken with it compared to the 50/1.4 USM. This was on my 1D3. Pictures was taken in tungsten-light AWB as WB. How come?

I don't think there was any difference on my 5D though...

That's impressive for f/2. :) Why do you think the Nikon couldn't do these colors?

I took around 12.000 pictures with the nikon. Impressive camera (high iso impressive) and lens. But the colors I was never happy with. This is even though I always shoot in RAW and I always fiddled with WB. I adjusted and adjusted the colors. But I could not hit the same glow and warmth in the colors as Canon L prime have at night. TRUST ME I have spend hundreds and hundreds of hours in aperture 3 and lightroom 3 trying to fix this, I did drive me CRAZY!!.. ... It was an expensive acquaintance for me to switch back to canon - but it was a great decision - I am very happy by doing this - my wallet was not: -) ....

Nikon's colors are a little colder than Canons. they are more blue in color, Canon is more red. It may well be that Nikon is more realistic, but my taste is more for Canon's colors.

I have to agree that Canon colors are more suited to my taste. I tried doing this myself by buying a Nikon D3 but, I couldn't get the colors to come alive like the Canon. So, I understand where you're coming from. :)

Upon first release there have been issues with front/back focusing with this lens. I think it's safe to say that the issue has been fixed but, I wouldn't doubt that one bad apple passes QC. :)

Is the front/back focus the same issue as the focus shift that people talk about when stopped down at close focus distances with this lens? I'd be really interested in this lens if the issue has been fixed like you say, but I was lead to believe that the problem was inherent in the lens design and the only way to solve would be a complete re-design and adding an element or something?

The front/back focus issue is different from focus shift. As far as I know, I haven't heard/read any reports on the issues recently. I do remember reading that there is a design flaw in the lens but, it looks like a lot of users on here are not having those problems. :)

Anyways, I'm selling my 50 L. After a doing a family shoot this weekend with the 50 and 85, I'm sticking with the 85. I tried to find that love again with 50mm but, it's not happening. :) So if anyone is interested, I'll be posting my 50 L up for sale.

Nope, it isn't.

Also, a redesign and adding an element isn't going to help at all. People who say that are only echoing internet myth.

Essentially, in the design of th 50L Canon tried to create a lens which has excellent bokeh both in front and behind the focus plane. Intrinsically, these are contradictory design issues. However, they somehow exceeded and created a lens at the bleeding edge of lens design in this regard, or maybe even slightly over the edge. This, I reckon, makes it a very hard lens to manufacture and assemble on a normal production line, even if it works well in the lab. I reckon they more or less solved this now, which is why we are seeing less lenses with problems, or with smaller problems. Additionally this lens is one that handles flare and ghosting incredibly well, is very (repeatably) accurate and decisive with regard to focusing, and provides a lot of pop when used properly.

Anyway, the good bokeh is caused by the same lens aberrations that cause focus shift (by definition always -variable- backfocus in the "danger zone" from about MFD to 6 ft/1.8 m, at apertures from about F/1.4 to F/28 ). Stopping down removes the rays from the outer parts of the lens and with that takes out the part of the lens with the spherical abberrations. The way to solve spherical issues, at least to some degree, is the inclusion of aspherical elements, which are specifically designed to handle this.

As to the extra element: people refer here to the extra element the 85L has, and refer often to it as the floating element. First of all, this is not a floating element, but a static one - it doesn't move at all. The 85L has a floating elements design - note the plural -, and this refers to all the other lens elements essentially. Furthermore, Canon specifically states that this last static element is there to correct for coma, not for spherical aberrations. A static lens like this is also used in some designs to combat internal vignetting (often used with e.g., macro lenses). BTW, the 85L also shows some focus shift, but always within AF accuracy of the body and AF points, as does a well calibrated 50L BTW.

In short, people clamoring for a redesign because of the reasons you mention don't necessarily know all the ins and outs, or failed to do the research (I am being polite here).

Essentially, it is a lens that does not have an equal, and that's it. It is also rather hard to use at large f-stops, especially in close-ups, like any large aperture lens. With its fairly large AoV, and a design well known for aberrations like coma, astigmatism and spherical aberrations, and doing what it does, it is one heck of a lens, especially at the price.

However, it seems to be a love or hate lens. So rent one if you can, to see if you like it or not. It may be an expensive mistake otherwise. Or buy a used one, and sell it on if you don't like it.

Finally, my own 50L has no issues at all. It has less focus shift then my 85L, and both are well within Canon AF specs, i.e, 1/3 of DoF accuracy with fast, F/2.8, AF points. However, I got mine a few years ago, when problems were a lot worse, and which was handpicked from 5 I tested over time with the least of problems (2 cm "regular" backfocus), and was calibrated twice by Canon to finally get rid of any problems. Took a lot of time and trouble, but IMO totally worth it - it is my most used lens after all :D.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

^I don't have too many problems with AF from 1.8 up, but once you get down to 1.2, it's pretty hard to focus! I use live view a lot of the time. It's worth it to me, though!
