So its true. It does suffer from CA . Can this be fix by canon on the lens itself. I know it can be dealt with using PP, but you paid $$$$ for this?. Now I see why some prefer the f1.4 (lilttle CA) or even the 1.8 (No CA). Still nice contrast.
I would say it's no worse than 35L, 85L & 135L for CA's. All primes, inc. L's, suffer from CA's wide open but that's to be expected and the 50/1.4 is no exception.

If he gets the horizon right, the people will be tilted. It's just not the perfect vantage from which the pic was taken ;) .. One option would be use the tricky transformation tool in Photoshop.

Hey Ed do you sharpen your photos in LR or photoshop? It always seems just right. Love the shots.
I don't typically sharpen in LR. I almost always export to CS3 and use USM for sharpening.
Did you pick up the 50L again? You always did get such great shots with the lens!
No. This is a shot I took when I still had the lens. It's been gone for a while now and I don't have plans to reacquire it. At least not in the immediate future.

The real world shots from this lens amaze me. The picture quality is similar to the 85L yet this lens seems to capture so much more in the composition. For some reason, the pictures I see from this lens, almost make me feel like a part of the scene.

No, I would never mind that. Thanks for noticing this wonderful lens from Canon. Right now, 50mm f1.2L is my most commonly used lens
It was taken about 7 am in the morning. The predominant light is actually from the background (yes, seriously backlighting). There is some light coming from her left diagonally and I did use a silver reflector to provide some fill in lighting to her right side of the face (not enough though)

Around her hair, there are some serious purple CA due to backlighting. It happens with all L primes wide open with serious backlighting.

True, but it takes a little work to get really bad CA and during import you can control it a fair bit. Part of the price of an L prime includes the ability to shoot wide open. In your shot I didn't even notice it as there are nicer things to notice; the lighting, the feel, the bokeh and the model doesn't hurt, either. :)
I love Canon's L primes... Clearly you do as well and it shows!

This lens totally rocks and I am selling mine! If you are interested, please go see my thread at the for sale forum. Anyway, I just wanted to say I adore mine, but am funding the 70-200 4 IS again because my kids simply run away at the first sighting of my camera and 50mm focal length since I have to be so close to them. It pretty much sucks. I don't want to get rid of this lens, but if my kids are avoiding me and I may have to venture into other areas of photography (such as birds, etc.), the 50mm FL just isn't going to work for me. This is definitely not due to a bad copy. This copy I have is excellent. Sharp and creamy. :(

Thanks for the nice comment. I just think I'll be better off with the 70-200 as I can venture into other areas of photography with it and my kids are running away from me... maybe I can catch more pictures of their backs from farther away, lol.

Do you KNOW me yet? LOL. Of course I will! It's such an awesome lens. But I've been a little neglectful in my indoor shooting as of late. Seems I'm just too darn lazy these days. And the kids are in bed before sundown, so outdoors won't be an issue. I will definitely miss the fab bokeh though. But what can you do? It's definitely all about focal length at this point. I'd rather someone else enjoy it who can put it to better use.

Mum, I know you're swapping the lenses around yet again, why not do a compromise and get the 50mm 1.4 and the 70-200 F/4 non-is? You'll get the best of the both worlds.

Not if you're trying to shoot your moving family, IS won't freeze the motion and chances are you won't be using a 70-200 inside. Heck, I'll trade you my 70-200 F/4 and some other goodies for the 50. ;)

Agreed. The 50L will give you high shutter speed with it's wider aperature. The 70-200 f/4 will let in 3 1/3 stop LESS light than the 50L, which is roughly 8x less light. If you anticipate your kids staying still then the IS will help you. I might suggest that you get the 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS over the f/4 IS for roughly the same price. That will let in a bit more light and give some nice bokeh.

No, this is for a new in box lens. The price is a discount price for members of photo shows. B&H will typically offer these discounts to members of these shows. These discounts don't normally show up in the regular search engine. You just have to know about them.
Don't worry, they are legit. I bought my 24-70L NEW for $984 using these codes.

Yep. It even worked as late as yesterday... Keep an eye out for a used one, they seem to change hands every now and again, though somewhat slower than more popular lenses.
It is new I just ordered one but looks like the sale is over now..
Here's a very quick "first shot" out of the new 50L. Sorry, no ducks - it's dark, cold and rainy out. ;)
Long and short of it, I did see the "focus shift issue" when shooting this as I purposely went looking for it. In the end, it's really not that bad. So far it seems like a nice lens and I hope to put it through further testing soon... It's very sharp and the bokeh is excellent.
For the record, none of the 50mm lenses have a floating system (unlike say, the 24L, 35L or 85L) so they'll all have some form of focus shifting. It's the nature of the beast. I think the biggest problem is people expecting there to be correction when there isn't. Focusing at f/1.2 and stopping down for the shot is more dramatic than focusing at f/1.8 or even f/1.4 and stopping down.

Actually, that's wrong. the 50 1.0L has a floating system. No focus shift.
Focus shift is really only an issue at large apetures, e.g. 1.4-type lenses or greater. 1.8 and lower generally has no focus shift (e.g. the 50 1.8, the 2.5macro, etc.)

There''s a shift, just don't shoot at 2.5 with your subject 3 feet away...simple as that.

Yep, you're right - I wasn't counting the f/1.0 lens - just the f/1.4 and f/1.8. The f/1.0 is unique in that it has a floating system. The shift does become less pronounced the "darker" the lens is and by f/1.8 and certainly f/2.5 it's not even noticeable. You're approaching the point if not right on it - where this shift occurs, and stopping down further gets enough DoF that the shift vanishes.

hmmm, a bit of contradiction in the above it seems ... "500 shots ... no OOF" AND "shift is over stated or hyped" AND "there is a shift".
These just don't seem to go together. If there is a shift and you're not taking any of your shots in the problem range then what do your 500 shots mean with regard to it? Those that know the issue know the shift occurs as you state, close in and stopped down. If this is where one plans to shoot one could have problems. Doesn't mean that you can't use the lens there, you just have to compensate accordingly. Its not hype or lack of understanding, its reality.

I would agree and disagree with your statement. There is plenty of hype and overstating the facts regarding the shift all over this and other forums. You here people talking about having shift at 1.2 all the way through the range. You read comments by folks saying the shift is 5-10 cm's, you read many comments about this lens that has nothing to do with the shifting. The three I've used are exactly as I've indicated. Yes, there's a shift, but stay away from the problem area and you'll be fine and/or compensate accordingly. So, really, I agree with that. The 500 shots I took were just an example of using the lens with no problems if you know how to use it.

Yeh, that's right. There are a lot of folks confused about the issue. I think they're pretty much on both sides though as there are probably an equal number of folks who disclaim that the focus shift issue exits at all. Since it is fairly certain that focus shift is part of the design, all lenses should exhibit it at least to the extent of normal copy variation.
As you relate, others point to problems they have with the lens which clearly have nothing to do with focus shift.
I agree that you can get great shots from this lens. I have thousands. After reviewing some shots I took this weekend with my new 135L, which I got to do head shots in place of the 50L, I'm reconsidering the 50L for these close in shots again. Even though the 135L is super sharp wide open it requires a much faster shutter spead than the 50L so in certain cases the 50L is more usable, even though that would put me into the focus shift region.

Hi all just been scanning some of the other threads and noticed a fair amount of animosity towards L glass primes, I cant believe the difference in image quality, sharpness, BOKEH etc with these lenses, they are superb. What do you all think, is it just me that notices this???
Animosity?
After a good, fast prime, L or not, 3rd pty or not, you'll know what the zooms cannot do.
