There are plenty of wonderfull photos in this thread.

This is my favourite, very nice Palna.

Thank you very much gavcam:)

That is one of the best BW renderings I have seen in a while. Very nice work, and it started in the camera for sure as a very nice high contrast shot.

Light bouncing around inside your lens reflected from the subject? I can't recall the technical name for that. If it only happens with that subject, my guess it is because they are crystals throwing light all directions......

Yes, I got that same explanation from Canon Service Center. Thank's! But I'm wondering why I'm seeing this with the 50L as I've never seen it before with any other lens. I've tried this exact same test with 70-200L, 85/1.8, 28/1.8, 50/1.4, 100/2.8 Macro and 135L.

But I guess I won't be troubled by it so many times...

it could be dependent on the optical formula (the distance and distribution of elements)

Well, I must say. I had high expectations. Very high expectations. So I knew the risk was high for being disappionted.

But after testing 20-something fast snapshots at home with wild kids and an impatient wife, I must say. This lens is doing what I expected; magic. Can't wait to shoot seriously with it. :D

Yes, the weight is another pro for this lens. Read somewhere that it is heavy, and of course, compared to the 50/1.8 it is but it is lightweight compared to 24-70. A great lens it is!

I love my 50 1.2 and its much bigger and heavier then the non L primes but still I find it feels just right on a full frame body. I also really like the 24-70 but its so massive and bulky that I have considered selling it many times but its an awesome lens too so I just deal with the size/weight. Honestly, I would have a hard time parting with either of them.

I do love the perspective of 24 and In many ways that makes perfect sense but the versatility of the 24-70 is really useful for me. I don't think I would shoot at 24 enough to justify that lens but with 2 bodies now it may make sense and I have thought about it.

With my 60D and 5D2 I would basically have 24, 38, 50, and 80 so its something to consider.

The 100L is a rockin lens. I highly recommend it.

Bad luck Brennan, keep us up to date on the solution.

I was dissapointed with my copy, but after a bit of experimenting I have at present -15 MA and it is a hell of alot closer to the way it should be.

I noticed when I was trying to shoot a small subject with very little difference in color to the background I was having difficulty getting an AF fix, it kept hunting.

Woah -15? Mines at -1 on my 5DmkII. I mean hey if -15 dials it in, then don't worry about it. But that just seems kind of steep.

I did the same with my 17-40 since the hood that comes with that is a joke, but haven't really tried the hood for the 50L yet.

I loved the way the hood fit on the 24-70 and would accomodate the entire focal length.

So i can only presume that it is the camera if anything that needs to be calibrated ??

possibly. I'd probably send Canon the lens and camera body together so it can get calibrated. of course I've never done that, so I don't know how well that might work afterwards with your other lenses.

tried taking pics of my pregnant wife. This one is a crop of just her head, as the rest of the picture didn't turn out too well. That, and the combination of my flash and ceiling lights made some interesting color combinations, so I turned it into a toned black and white.

I was trying out the outer points last night, and it didn't work too bad. I actually had quite a bit of sharp photos, and then of course I'd get a couple that were a little oof.

I quite often use all af points activated when shooting my grand children as they move around quickly, I don't even pay attention to which af point/points the camera is selecting but rather concentrate on composition. The majority of shots (around 90%) come out properly focused.

I'm with you on that one, actually :) I like to change my * to focus (back focus) when shooting sporting situations [but, honestly, I haven't used my 50L for sports. Though, I do use it for candids and snaps in between the halves and in btwn games]. In that case though, I really haven't used flash.

Hopefully one day I'd invest in enough lighting to set up during games. But, I only get a little side money for the work.... not enough to really "invest" in the hobby with, though. I just love sports shooting, so honestly, I'd do it for free if organizers didn't offer to pay!

At long last I am home from the US of A, complete with a brand spanking new 50L. I finally screwed the lens onto my 5D and here is the (almost) first image taken, a quick snap of my youngest daughter, standing in the shade in the carport. It is taken at F/2. (I must add it was a slap dash PP job but at least it's not a duck.)

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l169/ozimax/sal1.jpg

Although I have used this lens before, I think it will take some time to get used to the extreme narrow DOF. Contrary to many reviews, this copy is razor sharp.

do you guys use the outer points when focusing with the 50L? and if so, do you trust autofocus, or do manual?

Don't really trust them on the 5D so I'd rather do focus/recompose. It seems to work most all of the time for me actually. But on the 1D, all focuspoints works spot on, no worries.

Yep...I found the furthest left and right points aren't as sharp as the rest, but the remaining 6 outer points seem to do alright....and of course the center is always a crowd favorite

I suspect the outermost two laterals may not be at it's very best due to lens profile. Stopped down I'll happily use them.

I love natural light photos. That said, i'd been following the strobist thread for awhile and decided to learn something new; picked up some basic equipment, and now down a new avenue.

So, give me while before I decide if I like using my 50L with other than ambient and "fill flash" photography.

now mine was bought brand new and was horribly front-focusing, and it was also a UY date code. a trip to Canon seems to have fixed it.

now I hear others talking about their UY and UZ not having issues. it would indeed be funny if Canon did perform some sort of fix, and just hasn't brought it to public knowledge...I guess if that's the case, they would have to admit there was a problem in the first place with earlier copies, and couldn't bring it out as a 50mm f/1.2 II lens since there isn't any advancements other than a fix

Nope, don't regret selling my 24-70 for this lens one bit. The 50 has have given me pictures I could have not achieved with the 24-70. Pictures with the 50L have a dreamy look to them that I love.

If your shooting events where you need to get the shot the 24-70 is very valuable and IMO a very unique lens in its own right. Even though I rarely shoot events I would probably never sell mine, its such a useful range when you need versatility and 2.8 is still pretty fast but I do agree about the weight. If I ever do sell it that would probably be the reason. The 50L is certainly more fun to shoot with.

KAS
2nd of March 2011 (Wed), 11:54
Since getting the 50L, I have never used the 24-70. I can do just about everything I want with the 50L, and nothing beats 1.2. If I need wider, grab the 35L. The 50L stays on one camera all the time.

Some have said that the 24-70 is good for people who like to shoot with flashes. I say the same is true for the 50L. At f/1.2, you can use fill flash in much more difficult lighting situations. You're flash will go a lot further at super wide apertures.

I don't know if it's due to anticipation of people assuming a new 24-70 is coming out or not, but people are selling the 24-70 lenses left and right lately, and the prices keep going down.

I sold my 24-70 for $1,225 at the beginning of the month, and now it's not uncommon to see them for $1,000-1,050.

Ahh, haven't thought about that. May well be worth sell it quickly... or just keep it.

lol, sorry I keep bringing up other "variables"

don't be pressured by demand. if you enjoy the lens, keep it. if you feel that you are covered for that focal range, and could use the cash to plug a hole elsewhere, sell it.

I always just found myself using the range of around 50mm-70mm. I thought about the 85L, but didn't want that long of a focal range, especially if indoors. the 50L seemed to fit what I was looking for. and if I need wider, I have a 17-40 to cover it.

Thanks for input regarding med possibly selling the 24-70. I never used the 24-70 that much, and since my - very recent - buy of the 50 L I seriously wonder when I would use the 24-70. Still, I am afraid that at some point I would regret selling it. Irrational, but still, I am not sure whether I should sell it.

i'd die if I didn't have my 24-70, i think...but my main type of photography is sporting events.
