Animosity?

After a good, fast prime, L or not, 3rd pty or not, you'll know what the zooms cannot do.

;)

Yeah - zooms are a pretty tough sell after you've had primes. I'd definitely have to agree with this. Although zooms have their place as well.

Just bought a used 1DmkII, slapped my favorite walkabout on it (the 50L) Haven't been able to shoot any sports with the mkII yet but grabbed this shot this morning. I love spring:)

how many of you upgraded to this from the f/1.4 and what are your thoughts/feelings on the upgrade? I have the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8. I'm toying with selling both for this as they are pretty similar FLs to have 2 lenses in the bag.

You have a good poll question. (I think everything's a poll)

I went from the L to the 1.4 to the L....immediately after selling the L I had sellers remorse, recieved the 50/1.4 and it was ok......about two weeks later I went right back to the L....I just had to find out for myself if the 1.4 was gonna work for me...It didn't...I am a sticler for sharp lenses and the 1.4 was soft til after f2...I shoot in my house a lot and need it to be sharp from the get go...My 50L is that...pretty sharp from the get go...By 1.6 it's very sharp

jacobsen1

I am a sticler for sharp lenses.

me too. I've been happy, but not blown away with the 1.4. Basically it's miles better than my 24-70, but not in the league as my 24L or 135L. For me I have the 85 and 50 non Ls, but I'm toying with selling both for one L. The issue is there is now way I can afford a 85L right now. So it's basically down to is selling the 50 and 85 worth a 50L?

thatkatmat
27th of March 2008 (Thu), 15:13
I would.....but I have an 85L...The 1.8 is a pretty great lens....The 50L isn't as sharp as the 135L but is very close to my 35L which is supposed to be a little sharper than the 24L (which I've never used)......I like to have an 85mm FL in my bag....Not sure....If you buy the 50L new and don't like it you will lose a couple hundred in the resale of the lens. So...if you do....buy it used for as little as you can get away with....Or better yet, rent one, then YOU can decide. You'll also be dealing with the "shift" which some just can't get past.

I skipped the 1.4 and upgraded from the [first] 1.8 to the 1.2. Obviously, no contest.

Out of the quartet, the 35L is still my most-used though.

What about both? :)

I am using a 40D currently, and I'd love to get a 50L, but when I tested a couple, I had problems in the area I was going to use the 50L for, namely, close focus in low light. The focus shift at 1.2 m or 1.5 m and less from F/1.2 to F/2.8 meant backfocus all the time, and manual focus didn't help here. I tried adjusting one of my bodies (400D) at the time, but it didn't help, because if I did get it right at F/1.2-F/2.8 at < 1.2 m, it was out at greater distances at any aperture, and at < 1.2 m and smaller apertures. A lot of tests say the 50 F/1.4 is sharper than the 50L from F/2.8, but that certainly is not my experience (I tested 3 50Ls, 3 50 F/1.4s, 4 50 F/1.8 Mk IIs, and 1 50 F/2.5 CM at the time).

However, since then, which was earlier last year, people reported proper focusing specimens, any from July 2007 and onwards (UV07.. codes or newer).

After trying and testing three I settled on an 85L II and a 50 F/1.8 Mk I (the latter for the time being :)). I am likely to try another 50L within the next few weeks :). Bokeh, sharpness, contrast, and colour are very similar to the 85L outside of th๋ earlier "danger" zone. Just that the 85L is a bit long on a 40D at times.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

well you dont have 50mm focal length, and it is an important length... but the 85L is so beautiful - i'd go 50mm f/1.8 (cheapie) and 85L, myself, and get a better 50mm later

jacobsen1
31st of March 2008 (Mon), 09:30
why not get the 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 now, then see which you are using more and upgrade as needed? The L primes are fantastic lenses, but they don't come w/o a "price". First is obviously the money, but they're also much bigger and heavier than their non L counterparts. Plus the 85L actually focuses slower than the f/1.8. The normal old USM versions are wonderful and cost ~$700 combined I think? Easily <$1k even with hoods.

That said, I own them both and I'm considering selling them both for one L. The FLs are pretty close and I just want one less lens in the bag...

My son fell and scraped his hand, so I wasn't able to do too much. I'll have to wait til the hubby's around to watch the kids while I snap away. - And PLEASE remind me to stop dressing my kids in those damn white shirts!! LOL.

That depends on whether it is considered a real fault or not. Most people shoot outside of the problem range, i.e., 1.5 ft - 4 or 5 ft at F/1.3 to F/2.8 (F/1.2 being ok), and most pictures are outside of that range.

To me it was a problem because that was its intended use, it made it uncontrollable. Now it is, to me anyway.

I like to know too, if only just to see if Canon indeed can fix the older ones now, and because it is a fabulous lens, which doesn't deserve the bad rap it got, IMO.

Kind regards, Wim

My Dad got one recently. It had very bad CA so he exchanged it. That one was much better though on the 5D the vignetting is quite marked. Nice lens, a sample I shot as a test at f/1.2 on 1DmkIII:

I think I will get one but after the 24L and 14L mkII :)

Turns out mine is a UU1200.
I guess I better test it stopped down while it's still under warranty even if I don't shoot in the danger zone.

Might as well...

Spent a lunch hour on Friday at the local modern museum of art grounds shooting primes... But I specifically wanted to spend some quality time with the 50L to give it a proper workout. I looked at all the pictures and can't produce one sample where focus missed or, "shifted." It's a UV0101, calibrated by Canon in January (past the UV07xx code of last year)... The bokeh is excellent as is the sharpness - no complaints from me! Click for larger/info:

Do you have an extended warranty or did you just get an earlier produced lens? My lens is UU11xx and is been out of warranty for some time now.

Wow, thank you! :)

I agree, a bright prime can do wonders for emphasizing a subject. You just have to be very careful of two things; a) focusing dead-on to what you want (you want to direct the viewer's eye) and b) having enough DoF for the subject itself, or at least the effect you want. Some people like the "only one eye in focus look" (complete with blurry nose) whereas others definitely don't. So it's easy to overdo it as well. In retrospect, I should've used a sliiiightly deeper DoF on the ducky... But I was too focused (no pun intended, lol) on blowing out the background.
