Hi ALL!

This is directed to those who have both the 85L and the 50L. Would you advise for or against having both lenses? How are they used differently from each other?

I already have the 85L and the 50mm f1.4 and am contemplating upgrading to a 50L but had been hesitating because I hardly use the 50mm focal length (for both my 5D and 40D).

Most grateful for some input by owners who have both of the L primes. Thanks for reading and responding! :-)

Cheers

I'm favouring the 50/1.2 over the 85/1.2 II - don't know why.

I use a 1D Mark III though.

I would say yes, but that's just me. You said you don't use the 50mm focal length much, however. I will say this... I've had the Nifty for a little over five years - and I never used it either. I'm not sure why. I went out on a limb and picked up the 50L. I use it a LOT now. Between the two, there's clearly no comparison and the results are outstanding on the 50L so I'm pretty happy with it. In fact, I use it more than the 85L - which I find can be a little long sometimes, at least on a crop body.

+1 to cwphoto's and DN's remarks.

I also find I use the 50L more now. The 85L is often a bit on the long side indeed. Before I got the 50L, I often went out of my way to try and shoot with the 85L :D.

Kind regards, Wim

Thanks Guys!
I am quite surprised that not a single 50L 85L owner had any negative to share about the 50L. I thought that there would be at least a small handful that would advise me to stay where I am but now the temptation to upgrade has gotten a substantial push.

Thanks again

There are plenty of 50L and 85L owners that don't think much of the 50L. Try it and see how you like it. I traded my 50L for a 35L + $200 and am much happier with both the 35 and 85.

This is my 3rd copy:) All three have been nothing short of stellar.....But the first one I sold, I hadn't used the 50/1.4 and thought it would suffice........WRONG, the second one was sold to my buddy in Shanghai while visiting him, who has to pay an arm and a leg for Canon gear and this third copy will hopefully stay in my bag for many years to come. Anyways....Love it:cool:

I had the 50 1.4 but wasn't a fan of the focal length on the 1.6x body so I sold it off. Now I have a 5D so maybe it's time to revisit 50mm? I was just about set on the 35L but this is looking very good. I keep wobbling back and forth between the 35L and 50L.

Looking back through some of the shots I took with the 50 1.4 the colors look very dull and have a gold (more like copper) tint to them. I guess I never really did like that lens. The shots I'm seeing here with the 1.2 have beautiful color.

Hopefully I can decide before the rebates expire. Heavy sigh.

My Dad got one recently. It had very bad CA so he exchanged it. That one was much better though on the 5D the vignetting is quite marked. Nice lens, a sample I shot as a test at f/1.2 on 1DmkIII:

Thanks! :)

I can't decide on the 50L or the 24L next when I sell my 24-70L. Added to my 35L and 85L I'd have a superb prime kit. This lens was my Dad's 3rd copy and even then on FF I noticed serious vignetting but on the 1.3 crop looks great. That experience kind of puts me off a bit, though as this example I shot shows, it can be very good - and it tracks very well with moving subjects!

This is something you don't hear that much but is right on the money, sounds nuts but I prefer the 50L over the 85L I guess because of the FL, but they give very similar results. The 50L isn't as tack sharp as the 85L but it's sharp enough. Their color, contrast and bokeh are nearly the same.

I know you dont see this said much, but then again, these lenses arent designed for just anybody. You do have to know what you're doing to get proper results - and quit dwelling on trying to find flaws with it.

I do like the FL of the 50. It focuses a bit quicker than the 85, which is to be expected. That shot above was wide open and was tack sharp. I am in love. :D

I've owned 3, very nice 50L's every one working as it should. I've read posts by guys who've stated they've had 3-5 copies all with problems and so they've givin up. Either they've been very very unfortunate, they're exagerating or they don't know what they're talking about...it's not for me to judge so it's just a mystery

The first and last look pretty dark, are the others okay? I'm still getting used to a lot of this stuff and learning so I would appreciate the feedback. My only reference was the light when I was taking the photos and it was a lot darker while I took them than they turn out of the screen. There's plenty of room to push them but compared to how things felt while I was shooting them even the second is a little lighter than I'd like.

I love the post processing here. Can I ask what your method is? It has a look that Ive only been able to get with film. If it is film, then what film was it? I got to know!

Thanks man. It was a combination of adjusted actions from the Boutwell's Totally Rad Action set. Basically, a little bit of shadow lifting, midtone contrast boost, a warmup/levels action (Cinnamon Toast), a black&white action of mine at 10% opacity, and then added some grain (monochrome/level 12/ gaussian and adjust opacity to taste).

I think that's pretty much everything ... it was actually pretty quick. Maybe 10 minutes adjusting everything. I like that it looks like film, too. I love how film looks, just not working with it :)

+1

that bokeh is about as dreamy as the TS-E 90mm 2.8, in my opinion.

(that's a very good thing.)

well, except that it definitely captures specular highlights much better.

Haven't been doing too much shooting lately so it was a good change from what's been a pretty busy couple of months!

I decided to send in my 50L to get it checked out for the focus shift issue. Don't shoot in the danger zone but since I'm still within warranty and seems like a simple fix, might as well do it. Been procrastinating for a while!

You just get that "ghostly" look to the image when shooting wide open...

I just received a copy of this lens that I ordered from Adorama, it was on back order for about 10 days. This lens is hot off the press, the date code is UW06.

After hearing mixed messages about this lens I was very hesitant to invest in one, so I am a little nervous but hoping they got any issues straightened out. So far I love the size and build of it. Unfortunately I'll have to wait a few hours before I can try it out.

I guess we'll see! I'll definitely be putting it through its paces within the next two weeks! :)

Here's a few more @ f/1.2 and one of my latest finished instruments way up @ f/6.3 (sorry for the funky lighting, taken in my wood shop with overhead florescent tubes) . Image quality wise I'm pretty happy with this lens but I have to admit my keeper count on the wider aperture shots is down from the original metal mount 50mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2.0 I had used a lot before this lens. A big part of that has to be f/1.2 vs f/1.8/2.0 but I've spent a lot of time in the f/1.2 zone over the past weeks using auto and manual focusing without really getting a reliable handle on it. I'm thinking about sending this thing back for warranty service just to see if they can get it a little more consistent.

I took these at a big VW & Audi car show this past weekend in New Jersey. pretty much used the 50L exclusively never shooting it above f/2 (most were shot at f/1.6), only swapping it with my 70-200 for some auto-x pictures.
