Renting this lens this weekend, need to see it in action before I pull the trigger, from what I see from these pic's seems like a formality, but will play with it throughly !!love the 50 range so will swap my 1.4 for this.

Can I ask what you like better about the 50L compared to the 35L? Is it more than just a focal length preference? I have been thinking about making the same switch...

I often used my 35L for portraits and what i didnt like about it was the distorion when i came to close to the person.
Also the fact that you have to get pretty close to the person for a half body portrait.
And compared to the 50L the bokeh of the 35L is totally miserable. The 50L produces some bokeh that is really wonderful :)

The 50L shows both good bokeh in front of and behind the in focus zone, which is exceptional, as this is theoretically not really possible. The Canon engineers must have pulled all of their tricks out of their sleeves in order to get this right.

And unlike most wide aperture bokeh machines, it doesn't have a strongly delimited halo around the in focus subjects, which makes the image also more pleasant.

Then there is the almost impossibility to make it flare, resulting in excellent contrast, especially when stopped down a little. Shoot at F/2 and see 3D, essentially, if you select your subject and framing right :D.

It is also great at macro (for 3D subjects), despite being an F/1.2 lens. Just use it with one or more extension tubes. The rendering is just marvelous.

I've read your threads on this topic, so thanks for the reassurance Philip. do you have anything with a shorter FL in your gear?? I'm just a little worried i may miss the 25-49 range, even though I rarely use it. :(

actually, as of right now, the 50L is my only lens now :D

I sold off my other lenses when my son was born. I'll eventually rebuild once I decide which way I want to go (looks like primes at this point).

Thanks, it just looks so like a candid shot, not a staged one. Get the50mmL and start saving up for a 17-40 right away :-). Having a 50mm as the widest lens could be constricting, perhaps. Maybe a 28mm 1.8 or 24mm 2.8 could supplement it?

Just get it! Do you have kids? I've got 4 & that's the main reason I got mine. Although I use it for everything. If I could have only one lens this would be it!

The 50L shows both good bokeh in front of and behind the in focus zone, which is exceptional, as this is theoretically not really possible. The Canon engineers must have pulled all of their tricks out of their sleeves in order to get this right.

And unlike most wide aperture bokeh machines, it doesn't have a strongly delimited halo around the in focus subjects, which makes the image also more pleasant.

Then there is the almost impossibility to make it flare, resulting in excellent contrast, especially when stopped down a little. Shoot at F/2 and see 3D, essentially, if you select your subject and framing right :D.

It is also great at macro (for 3D subjects), despite being an F/1.2 lens. Just use it with one or more extension tubes. The rendering is just marvelous.

I bought my 50L and immediately sold the 24-70, and haven't looked back :D

actually, as of right now, the 50L is my only lens now :D

I sold off my other lenses when my son was born. I'll eventually rebuild once I decide which way I want to go (looks like primes at this point).

I did the same thing Phillip has done and dont regret it. I am planning on getting the 135l in the future, but have been content for the past year.

135L is also my next purchase. But also seriously considering the 100L or 70-200 f/2.8 IS as alternatives..

I considered the 100L...the 70-200 2.8 IS I or II is nice as well....but they can't beat the 135L at f/2.0 ;)

Hey Eric, right now I'm leaning with the 50 and a 135 , I have a 85 1.8 which I really like but that would be more for strobist stuff. My only dilemma is can I live without the 24-70 !!!

You can or can't live without it? I kind of miss the practicality of a zoom but I LOVE the amount of light this bad boy lets in.. Flare city USA and I'm lovin' it.

Right now I'm running a 28 and 50. That 135 really would compliment my set. But the 70-200 also looks so freaking versatile. I'm pretty sure I'd be happy with the sharpness and usability of both. The 135 seems a bit more specialized, but I'm okay with that. I'm not too sure how I'd handle the BIG 70-200 though, I'd definitely need a new bag.. or another one.

Thanks to this thread, I just grabbed this lens to go with my newly acquired 5D. My first impression was the size. It was actually smaller than I anticipated. Informal shooting, focus seems spot on and I am excited to start using it. Like others, I am considering the 135L with the current instant rebates.

Have a look at some of the pictures by member "Wem" in this thread, to see what I mean. I particularly like his picture of the market, near a church, in Leuven, Belgium. And there are quite a few others. Start browsing at page 30 or thereabout, and move forward :D.

As to Zeiss: you have to like the look these lenses create, and that is a very personal thing. Having tested quite a few of them, I've come to the conclusion they are not for me, give me a 24L, 50L, 85L, 135L, 180L any day. These are all capable of creating 3D images, where 50L and 135L are probably best. 3D-ness is about isolation and transition to OOF, and actually can be created in PP as well.

As to contrast - I think there is a lot of hype surrounding this, as essentially Canon Ls generally show great contrast, and the newest ones are better than ever.

Essentially, Canon Ls are probably better at some points, and Zeiss lenses at other points. IMO from that POV, on average, it is possibly much of a muchness. However, when it comes to SOOC images, and ease of PP, for me Canon comes first. Of course, YMMV.

As to the 50L specifically - you have to see the images to believe it. Ideally you may want to rent a few lenses for a while, to see which you like best, but I am a great fan of the 50L, and despite testing 30+ 50 mm lenses, IMO there is nothing that beats it. :D

I took it in the kitchen, as our house is small and we don't have a lot of open space. I didn't have a "spare" wall, so I took a 72" reflector I had, stripped it down to the translucent side and used that as the "wall". I don't like that you can see the wrinkles in the fabric, but I didn't want to mess with it in post.

mine just arrived in the past hour and trying to explore using the lens. should I be miffed that I waited home all day to sign for the UPS package (which it was stated in tracking I needed to sign for delivery), only to have the delivery guy saying I didn't need to sign and he was just going to leave it on my doorstep? Was pretty peeved he was just going to put a package that is in the 4 digits on my porch if I wasn't home.

If you were a dishonest person and wanted to teach him a lesson you could always report it stolen. Doesn't UPS have to cover it when a signature is required and they don't get it? Unless he's a dishonest person and signed for it himself.

Maybe your lens needs some micro adjust.

Nope! it's much faster compared to, and definitely slower compared to the 50 1.8 and 50 1.4. Both lenses are worthy of reserved camera bag space.

Anyone in here have this and the 85L? I have a 35L (opted for it instead of the 50L, since I thought the 50L would be too close to the 85L) and while it is an excellent lens and I love when I use it, I just find myself not using it as much as I had hoped to! I'm semi debating selling it and getting a 50L, but then again...

I have both. The 85L excells at strict portraits, while 50L is irreplaceable for environmental/PJ portraits. I initially thought they'd be too close, but I just can't give up the 50L. It does something so special. I'd probably give up the 85L first.

Wow, i like the thin DOF!

The DOF looks PP in this one.

It's only focused in the centre and even parts the same distance from the camera as the focus point are OOF??

First time sharing in this thread. I recently purchased the 50L during the old instant rebates.

Not a typical F1.2 image. The day was gloomy. Took a break from some portrait snaps and tried landscape. I have a feeling this will look great printed large, as some of the pop is lost downsized. The cypress tree in the center is quite sharp. The moment seemed to be a great opportunity to experiment with such a shallow depth of field in landscape. That being said, I definitely did not purchase this lens with this intention.
