I feel the AF on the 35L is faster.
Compared to the 85L, the 50L is lighting fast!:D

Ah, the good old focus shift. Well now you know. I know there are folks who proclaim the shift as urban legend or something to that effect.

But as you can see, it is very real, and you don't have to be shooting charts and rulers for it to rear its ugly head.

I know all too well how you will. If not for the focus shift, this would be an absolutely deadly lens.

Still a pretty darn impressive piece of glass!

This is a GREAT lens. I played with it for the first time today when I was returning my 35L at the store, and I was wowed by it. Whaddya mean slow AF? This thing felt smoother and just as fast as my 35L was.

Focus shift, sadly, was quite noticeable :(. I took a whole bunch of test shots. If it didn't have that this would be hands down a no-brainer for my bag, I'd buy it without hesitation (heck, I almost DID).

Just try a few more, until you find a good one :). You'll never look back.

With "focus shift" do you mean it constantly regrips when trying to lock focus (in AI servo)?? Thanks.

From color capture and saturation and overall quality it's a joy to use. After using Canon's 50mm f/1.8, f/1.4 and the f/1.2 the f/1.2 wins hands down in my book.

Now that Im on the hotel computer, I can definitely see what you mean with the colors on her skin. I fear that all my latest shots Ive edited on her computer will have slightly inaccurate colors. We'll see. It'll be be just a few days before Im back home and able to edit my *shudder* digital shots correctly.

Thanks Wim - but I see no issues in real world shooting, and in the areas where there's a bit of backfocus, if I switch to the outer AF points, it's actually 100% SPOT ON, I don't think I'm gonna risk sending this one in and having them mess up, it really is awesome :D.

Now try shooting something at F/1.2 with a lot of stuff at different depths all over the frame, like a plant with stems or branches all over the place in all directions, and check the edges where parts are in focus, and then tell me what you see, as compared to the centre part where you focused on something :D.

Now try shooting something at F/1.2 with a lot of stuff at different depths all over the frame, like a plant with stems or branches all over the place in all directions, and check the edges where parts are in focus, and then tell me what you see, as compared to the centre part where you focused on something :D.

Kind regards, Wim :D

P.S.: you might be amazed :D

Are you talking about corner sharpness? No plants in the apartment and all the ones outside are dead, but I took a quick shot of a pile of dirty laundry  and the 50L rendered it beautifully. This thing's low light capabilities are nothing short of INSANE. 1/50s at f/1.2, max ISO....it can see in the dark o_O.

Post an example so we all know what you're talking about! :D

That would blow out the inside of a cave, assuming you're shooting at f1.2....at ISO3200 f1.2 + 1/50s is too much for even the darkest of locations...this lens is crazy in low light.

Yes, I know, but once you have seen what the 24L is capable of, you don't mind it is 4 mm shorter. I am a 28 mm man too, and not a 35 mm man either. BTW, you can always start with a 24L Mk I :D.

Now, this is a perfect example of what I tried to tell Perry :D.

Just check that flower at the left bottom. Whatever is in DoF, is sharp, even at F/1.2. And that in areas with very little contrast!

I reckon this lens has some field curvature, which is to be expected for such a fast, relatively short lens. And I do think that this is something that makes people think it is only good in the centre at F/1.2, especially when focusing nearby :D.

Great picture, I just love it, and thank you for posting this!

Thanks! Glad you liked the shot. :D

Its just a staggering lens isnt it?

This is my second copy and fortunatley this one is a very good one.

I was always a wide angle guy, but the 50L is just so wonderful.

When I put it on my camera, I get a real sense of expectation, rather than when I go out with my 24 or 35, which are just tools. There's something more with the 50L.

Once again, thank you for all your advice with this lens.

It has a strange power of attraction, indeed, almost a kind of mystique I'd say, at the chance of ridiculing myself :D.

I do rate the 24L very highly as well, however. Maybe a little less than the 50L :D.

Seriously, I kind of hate you guys (maybe Perry as well since he created a thread about his 50L). I've been using the 50 1.4 on my 5D and it is my favourite focal length for a walkabout. However, I'm always greedy for better bokeh and colours especially at f/2 and wider; the 50 1.4 does a decent job for the price but 50L seems to be.... well....

Now I'm torn between purchasing the 50L or 24-70L.... this is such a headache.

The 24-70L has great bokeh too, just different. The 24-70 get's it's slim DOF from it's 70mm focal length and by it's ability to get really close to it's subject. The 50L can't get any closer than about a meter. It get's it's Slim DOF from it's really bright aperture.
I think the question is this, do you need versatility over shooting brightness?
I personally wouldn't want to be with out my 24-70...or my primes.

yup, soz...1/2 meter. But you're probably not going to want to take portraits that close. Just under a meter is about right for head and shoulders portraits. The 24-70L can go wider but needs to get closer to yield a simular DOF effect but does mean less moving about in tight spaces. I'm not saying get the 24-70L over the 50L, but I'm just trying to bring some perspective to the choices that these two fantastic lenses offer. There's no right or wrong answer here, just a choice related to a personal shooting requirement.
in an ideal world, a photog would have both available.

I've shot a bit with the 24-70 and never liked it. Both the 24L and the 35L are much better at 2.8 with less barrel distortion and much sharper. And then you have two more stops. Well given what you shoot and how you shoot, you'd probably love the 50L. It's the best low-light/available light lens I've shot with, that 1/2 stop makes a big difference and the colours, contrast, and bokeh on this lens are really something else. There's something a little special about the images shot with this lens. 50mm is such a nice focal length too.

Well, if you're the type who sits at home shooting boxes and charts (which I know you aren't Allen), this lens is gonna suck monkey balls for you, which is why I'd have to recommend it with qualifications - but even then, I have a hard time forcing it to shift, it can be done with a pedantic enough chart or target, but it's negligible for me. In real world shooting, it has been absolutely PERFECT for me (in fact, I'm off to take it for a spin right now), and that's what's important. I have yet to take it off my 5D...I love it.

Definitely worth it, especially if you get a good copy. Sharpness-wise, it's not as good as the 35L or 85L wide open, but it's still pretty good and the colours and contrast are (and it hurts me to say this) nicer than the 85L.

The contrast is just amazing!!

Re the "look" of the pictures it gives, there's just something regal about it. The images have an authority about them, a weight, the combination of the contrast and the deep (not gaudy) colours produces images that are just so classy. Rich and deep.

I imagine it will be jaw dropping on a 5D MkII.

Allan, I wholeheartedly agree with Perry's words.

I've been saying the same thing for quite a while now, although less outspoken, essentially because there is this point that you may have to check out more than a single copy, or 3, or 4, or even more, to get a well working one. And after that, you have to get over your anxieties because of the ordeal of trying to get a good one.

However, I've always said that, when I saw the potential of this lens based on my first (shifty) copy, I would own one, once I found one that worked well in the dreaded "problem zone".

It is just the best 50 currently, and IMO probably not only of all fast AF 50s out there, but likely also all fast MF 50s, and on top of that has incredible bokeh, both before and after the DoF zone. Colour is very much like the 24L, but better, and resistance against flare is out of this world.

It is a strange lens. You need to work with it for a while to fully appreciate it, and get over the angst that internet forums impose on one for this lens. I find that even now I do check occasionally if it still focuses correctly, and after I've done so, I wonder why I have this irrational fear that it somehow may have gone out of kilter focus wise. Fortunately, this fear is subsiding. :D

OTOH, considering the 24L is one of your favoured lenses, about which many people said disfavourable things as well, I reckon you should really give it a try, and discover for yourself. :D

Thanks so much for the write up and from your previous posts I figured this lens is indeed a gem. For both the 24 and the 50 I've owned really good FD versions so I was surprised to hear so much neg about either lens.

I hear all the slow focus complaints about the 85 also and I gotta tell ya with a little time with it like you should spend with any new piece of gear I don't miss shots and I don't see a real problem. Is it a bit slower that other lenses SURE but its not the snaily beast most make it out to be.

Perry,
Monkey balls aside, I think that's generalizing things a bit too much IMO.
The shift is indeed negligible until it hits you hard. I don't agree that it takes shooting a bunch of charts to see this in all its glory.

It'a actually VERY simple to recreate, everytime with much accuracy. Every one of them does this, do varying degrees. I know we are beating a dead horse here, but I read all too much folks who complain about the 50L being chart shooters and what not.

It's not so crazy to be shooting this lens 4 feet away from the subject at f2 is it? Not to me.

I am trying to be as fair as possible. I still have this lens after all the troubles I have gone through, so that's saying something. Overall I agree that this lens is very nice. But potential buyers should be ready to learn all it's quirks...

Getting a good copy can be a crap shoot. It's not even close to being as sharp wide open as the 35L or the 85L. It CA like there is no tomorrow wide open.

But you are right in that there is a certain look it has. Not sure if it beats the 85L in any way other than the AF speed and weather sealing however...

I couldn't hide my wallet quick enough...but it ain't so bad being short $5k for this lens...;)
Definitely give it a spin, if anyone can learn to appreciate and master this lens to get the most out of it, it's you Allen. I STILL haven't taken mine off the 5D.

As for that 200....*hides wallet*

The scary thing about this particular lens is that this time last year I could pick one up for about £700, this year it's nudging £1200. Which is a massive price hike and completely unwarrented 70% increase. Where as other lenses in the Canon range have increased by about 10-15%. It seems that Canon want to milk their prime users...

I can't believe the UK gets shafted for prices like that. The 50L is expensive here too though. I got mine used for about USD$860 , and I like to think of it as the "POTN copy" of the 50L given its history.

$860?! Why don't I ever get so lucky. :(

Perry Ge
7th of March 2009 (Sat), 14:34
It was actually CAD$1100, which is a reasonable used price here, but our currency sucks so much right now that after conversion it comes to about US$855. It was also a crazy series of POTN-events that led to this lens coming into my possession. Solution? If you're in the states, buy Canadian .

Wouldn't import tax neglect any potential savings? :(

Alas, I'm still looking for this lens for under $1,100 USD. That's most likely an unrealistic price, but oh well.

Perry Ge

Cameras and lenses are tariff-free under NAFTA ;), there's no import tax from Canada->US and vice versa on gear - you just gotta pay local taxes as you would on any purchase [that's why it's not worth it for us to buy from B&H - the exchange rate sucks and our regular taxes are super high].

Cool I'll try that. The above was just a quick snapshot anyway so I wasn't really thinking. Might have to mean shooting at 1/8000 at ISO50 in daylight though .

I like to underexpose anyway (Gordon Willis is my hero :) -Have you seen the cinematography on Klute ).

The "look" of this lens when underexposing is very similar to that vibe. Deep blacks (from the amazing contrast), but browns, oranges and creams have a slight "toasty" look and greys are very cold, but luminous at the same time.

My favorite focal length is 24, but despite that this is my favorite lens, its just remarkable.

time to push this thread up!
I lOVE this lens. This was last night, wide open, 1/160, manual focus, so just a quick handheld shot, only PP was straightening, sharpening and some added exposure to the gold statue on top as she was too dark to see--all done in LR. On top of that, this is taken while coming out of a restaurant after many hours and many glasses of wine  Wasn't really planning on it turning out given that!

I waited a long time to decide on this lens--50mm is my comfort zone but there was so much talk about this lens and I delayed. I did do some micro adjustments on the 50D, 5D is in the shop so haven't had a chance to play with it on that one yet. This is definitely my favorite lens now!

Couple from the other night. Not the most in-focus of all images, but the emotion within means more, to me.

I also realized that I never shot a duck with my 50/1.2, but I did find a goose. Or swan. It was large, and tried to eat me.

Thanks perry.
As you can imagine, for these shots I was pretty close to the subject. I am not sure if shooting flowers at a flower show constitutes "real world" shooting, but here's a perfect example of when this lens leaves a LOT to be desired.

That particular shot you were referring to was shot at f2.8. Actually, that was probably my best shot of the day. I saw, I shot, and out it came exactly how I saw it.

But on the very next shot, though I like the shot, you can see the "ghostly" look to the 50L when shot at wider apertures, in this case f1.4, and at close range. I'll admit this was not the look I was going for...

All my shots at f1.2 are garbage. It's just too "ghostly" to salvage.

That said, it's not everyday I would use this lens in this capacity, and perhaps it was an error on my part to even select this lens for this task. (Maybe I should have used my 35L instead?) But really, isn't it silly to even have to think like that? The reason why I chose the 50L for this task was because I felt comfortable with the FL. However, other than the few shots taken at f1.2-f1.4, they all turned out rather nicely...

Yup, I agree with you there Niksun, sometimes the DOF at f1.2 can be too thin. When I first got my 85L, I used to shoot everything at f1.2 because it was such a novelty. These days, I shoot what the image requires and some times that involves a wide open aperture. I've even shot this lens at f16! Surprisingly, It makes a fine landscape lens.

Gave this lens a good workout on a recent holiday. The rain was threatening, though it never manifested, so I desired the weather sealing just in case. I did shoot hundreds of shots stopped down - it works beautifully as a landscape lens. But wide open is where it reveals itself.
