While she looks so very peaceful and angelic, she was actually on a rampage. She wanted more than anything to grab hold of her own butterfly and love on it (a certain death sentence for the poor thing). Immediately after taking this an elderly woman to the right made a face of total disaproval at the child's behavior. I, however, had no complaints

Thanks to everyone for the raves. I'm not big on entering most contests, only commercially related ones hold interest for me, and alas, being a pure candid at a busy event, I have no model release. It's prominently featured on my website though, which is good enough for me :)

Oh totally. Unfortunately the event is always so packed. I could have dropped everything and gone after them I suppose.

What's funny, is that they have special times for "photographers only" where you pay several times the entry fee and they limit it to 30 people. But I guarantee that none of the photographers who forked over the cash got anything like *this*   bwah hahaha!

Okay, maybe I can't guarantee that . . .

I only brought my 5D and 50L on my trip to the Philippines in March. The combination worked well for me and I never really regretted leaving my 24L and 85L back home. The minimal camera gear made it much easier traveling with my carry-on luggage. Here are some shots from Zambales:

i just ordered this from the camera shop today. i couldnt decide if i wanted the 85l 1/2 or this one. im glad i went with this one :) i love the idea of a portrait lens but this one seems like it would be more for an all around kind of deal. plus, i have the 70-200 2.8 to hold me over on portrait stuff for a while.

Congratulations!

Better watch it, however, it is even more addictive on a 5D II. To be able to use any of your other lenses you may have to get a second 5D II :D.

Oh, I don't adapt it - and there's no way you could even *remotely* attempt to. It's a lens made for a 6x7 medium format rangefinder. Half the lens is behind the mounting flange! No, I'll use this on the Mamiya 7II as-is. :)

Thank you!

My other lenses (35L etc.) are amazing too, but I have never seen such colorful and contrasty shots straight out of camera before I got 50L. Can you tell that I'm happy with it? :D

It does focus-shift around MFD though. I bought it used, but it has 7 months of warranty left, so I'm considering sending it to Canon and see if they can make the shift less noticable. Has anyone here tried it with any luck?
Yes, I have, but then, my last and current copy (fifth) had unnoticeable shift (within DoF), and only 2 cm overall "normal" backfocus, and I live in the Netherlands, so ot did go to th eDutch Service Centre :D. BTW, it still took two trips, last year, once in May, after which it only had 1 cm of "normal" backfocus left and once in September, when Canon fixed it completely.

Kind regards, Wim

I knew about the shift when I got the lens, so I'm not disappointed, but if it can be improved I sure wouldn't mind. :) If it becomes as good as yours I don't think I'll ever unmount it... Fortunately I have two 5Ds, so the other lenses can share the other one. :D

I have to agree, the 50L produces some contrasty, saturated shots - more so than other lenses. There's something about it.

I had mine calibrated by Canon (post July 2007) and quite honestly, have never had any shift issue. Maybe it's what or how I shoot, 'dunno - but I'm extremely happy with my 50L. The word is that Canon figured out a fix past that timeframe, but without Canon's input it's sort of a guess. Did you get your lens new? What's the date code?

wimg
29th of May 2009 (Fri), 10:30
I bought it used, but it has 7 months warranty left, and I have already confirmed that I can send it in and have it checked out for free at the Canon service center here in Norway. Its date code is UU1200. Don't know if that's old or new.

The shift doesn't affect most of my shooting, but I won't deny that it'd be nice to be able to use it at all distances without concern. I'm not even 100% sure that it is focus shift - maybe it's simply backfocusing (at close distances it focuses behind my intended target - never in front of it), but I think it is shifting, because it seems to get worse when I stop the lens down a bit.

EDIT: Hmmm... After some googling I think I have figured out that UU means 2006. Can that be possible for a lens that was bought new 5 months ago? Maybe I should have asked the guy who sold it for the date code, but it never occurred to me that he had gotten an old lens from the store. Is this a problem, you think? Well, too late to worry now. I'll just enjoy the lens, and if Canon can make the shift less noticable that's great.
It can well be that it was only bought new 5 months ago. You wouldn't have 7 months warranty left otherwise. It happens here too. Turnover in lenses is a lot less here in Europe, it seems, than in the US, especially in smaller shops. And right at the introduction, some people got good and better lenses already, and some got worse ones, so no need to worry about the date code, as long as you have a decent copy.

You may have to send in at least 1 of your 5Ds as well BTW, for calibration, and explain exactly to Canon what is happening when.

Do note that on the 5D Classic, AF somehow misses on average about 1 in 20 shots, mostly close to MFD, but not always. At least it does that with my 5D. That problem went away with the 5D II.

However, from your description it sounds like it does shift. Do note that focus shift always moves focus to behind the point you focused on. The difference with "normal" backfocus is that it is not consistent throughout the whole range of apertures and focusing distances. I'd expect it to shift from MFD to about 1.5 or 1.8 m focusing distance, at apertures from F/1.4 to F/2.8 or F/4, although others report slightly different distances and a wider aperture range.

I'd suggest you try shooting at F/2, from MFD to intervals at 25 cm out to 2.5 m (or further if required), and see where the shift disappears. Next try with different apertures at a middle distance between MFD and the distance where shift disappears to try and establish where shift stops, aperture wise, starting at F/1.4 and working your way up to about F/5.6 in 1/3 of a stop increments. If it isn't too bad, like you seem to indicate, it probably disappears at around F/2.8, and from about 1.5 m.

For testing I like to use a brick wall, preferably red or brown variegated bricks with good structure, stuck together with mortar that shows clear sandgrains as well, and focus on the closest vertical edge of a brick from an angle of approximately 45 degrees (all on tripod, MLU, remote switch, etc.). I find this works very well for the determination of focus shift and its effects :D. Just make notes of what you did and what happens, and explain that to the Canon Service Centre too.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

P.S.: I'd appreciate it if you could post your results here too, as I am very interested in this type of stuff.

Thank you Wim for the helpful reply!

Too bad that you had a chance to read and quote my original message. I realized that it sounded much more negative than it really is so I wanted to change it, but I'll leave the original post up now and explain here that the problem isn't as big as it may seem.

It only occurs between f/1.8 and 3.2 at close distances, and most of the shots still look fine, especially since I'm not a pixel peeper. If Canon can improve it it'd be great, if not, I can live with it. Besides this problem the lens is absolutely perfect.

Do note that on the 5D Classic, AF somehow misses on average about 1 in 20 shots, mostly close to MFD, but not always. At least it does that with my 5D. That problem went away with the 5D II.

Glad to hear that you're happy with the mkII! It seems to be an amazing camera and I'll probably get one in future, but for now I'm extremely happy with my old 5Ds. I haven't noticed any focus problems at all (except now with 50L) and I shoot wide open and close to MFD a lot, for example with 35L and 135L.

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it a lot! What you describe sounds very much like what I have found, so I think I can safely say that it is focus shift then and not regular backfocusing. I already know that the problem disappears if I move back a few steps, so I don't think I will bother to do any tests before I send it in. If it comes back exactly the same (or worse!) I can do more tests then before sending it in again.

Sorry about all the posts today, but since I had some complaints about the lens I want to tell you the good news.

I decided to do some tests afterall, because I suddenly remembered that there is a learning curve with every lens, even when you have used large aperture lenses before. I took several shots around MFD between f/1.2 and 4, and found that the focus shift can be measured in millimeters at worst!

This explains why none of the real life photos I have taken have shown any focus errors. I must have done something wrong with my quick test shots before.

I'm so happy! I really enjoyed the lens before and now I can love it whole-heartedly like I do the 35L. :D

If weather permits I plan to go shooting tomorrow, and I have joined a 50mm challenge that runs for an entire month at a Norwegian forum, so I'm pretty sure that I'll soon have some photos to post here.

Again I'm sorry! To my defense I did say I liked the lens and that it wasn't a huge problem. :)

 You're so right!

This is actually the first time I have done that kind of testing. Normally I just take a few quick shots around the house when I get a new lens, and if those look OK I start using it in real life and don't think more about it. I guess I had read too much about possible problems and found some that weren't even there. No more of that! :)

Is this lens really that much better than the 50mm 1.4?

In my opinion? Definitely. I owned 2 50 f/1.4's and neither were terribly impressive. But the 50 f/1.2 is my most used lens, and I'm shooting below f/2 pretty often, so it's worth it to me. If you're only going to use it once and a while, and/or you're going to be using it above f/2.8, then the 50 f/1.4 should be fine.

Thanks for your input. You've got some really nice shots on your blog.

Takes a lot of discipline to remain quiet on the focus shift thing...but so far...I'm doing it. ;-)

Agreed. That kind of stuff will drive you nuts.

Is this lens really that much better than the 50mm 1.4?

In a word? Yes.

well, i finally got a chance to give this lens a shot .. and yes, from what everyone is saying about the shift is and can be reproduced and also stay away from .. and it can be trying to learn how to use a lens again LOL

of course when i got the lens, i shot the usual lens cap and small toy figures and yes, it can really bum a person out quick ! lol .. but once you put it towards what its intended for, its a totally wonderful beautiful lens !

Let me add my 2c: I'd rather shoot a 50 F/1.8 Mk II or a 50 F/2.5 CM than a 50 F/1.4, and I have tested 6 of the 1.8 Mk II, and 5 of the 50 F/1.4.

The 50L is my most used lens as well.

Kind regards, Wim

My 50L came today from B&H. Here are a few of my first casual shots (I am no professional):

http://phatak.zenfolio.com/p617685298

I did not experience any focus shift even when stopping down up to f/3-4-ish when I had the subject gradually back away from the lens. I find the color/contrast/sharpness to be brilliant, but not quite as nice as my 35L/85L but it is an unfair comparison as they do not capture 50mm :D

Would love to know whether the images I shot are consistent with the output others are getting!

^^For the most part, not bad at all. I'm curious, though, as to why you don't use ISO 100? That would slow down your shutter speed, and make the colors even better/brighter, as noticed in the shots you had at those slower SS's. Maybe still learning everything there is out there? Takes a while, I know that much, and I don't think it ever ends.

Lens looks to be a keeper. ;)

Likewise, I think everyone here who has contributed has really shown what a great lens this is.

I received the Canon ee-s focus screen this morning. It's AWESOME. It really works. Unless I am shooting action or using a camera with many focus points, it's unlikely that I will use autofocus again.

Does anyone know if this screen is available for a 5D-II..?? I've heard a lot of good things about it.

I've looked into it a bit. According to the product page for the Ee-S focus screen (http://estore.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=161619&langId=-1), the screen is compatible with the 5D and other models, but there is no mention of whether it is compatible with the 5D II. I'd say contact Canon directly or create a new thread dedicated to the topic. At this point, I personally would not upgrade to the 5D II if a comparable focusing screen were not available; that's how much I like this thing. I would go so far as to say that, in order to use these wide aperture lenses like the 35mm f/1.4L, 50mm f/1.2L, and 85mm f/1.2L II to their full potential, one should have this focusing screen. It really does make manual focus a gazillion times easier. With the stock screen, I could never be sure whether my image was in focus when focusing manually. With this thing, I am 100% sure. Even if you don't like manually focusing, it will make autofocus more useful if only in that it makes the in-focus area substantially clearer in the viewfinder.

I'm not sure why 5Ds don't ship with the Ee-S by default. :-)
