Is it possible to use standard lenses on the S3 with the lens adapter/step rings? If so, how does this affect the focusing? Or is it only filter-type lenses (like lensmate sells) that can be used as an add-on to the S3?

I ask because the lenses in the teleconverter thread just looks like a standard telephoto lens. If any lens can be used, it would be interesting to play around with different things to see how they work.

The tele- and wide-converter lenses operate completely differently from a stand-alone lens. So no, you won't be able to use a standard SLR lens on the S3 except as a (see the sticky on macro with the A70) close-up lens.

Here is an article on using one for Macro: http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/canons3/s3macro/s3macro.html

Here is my venture into utilizing my old 35mm Nikon zoom lenses on the S3 for macro use.

Very good results.
