Hey all,
dropped my A80 on some rocks a while back and dented the top left hand side. The camera works fine so i'm not too stressed but l was just wodering does anyone know if it's easy to take the top panel off. I'm considering taking it off and doing a bit of panel beating to pop the dent out. If its complicated or there's a chance of damaging anything l won't bother but if it's quick and easy i'll give it a shot. Views/comments appreciated.

Thanks.
Brent:)

If its the front metal plate that's dented, then it should be easy to take off and fix/replace.

You'll have to remove the screw in the bottom that holds the front plate, and also the shutter/zoom button (one screw located in CF compartment, two located in bottom of battery compartment) to remove the button assembly. Note that there is a two wire connection connecting the button assembly to the rest of the camera. You can leave it plugged in, or unplug it to get it out of the way.

After removing above said screws and shutter/zoom button, you need to very gently pry the piece up ever so slightly around the edge starting at where the bottom screw was holding the piece to the camera. As you're looking at the front of the camera, there is a tab on the lower left, and two tabs that bend downward on the top edge of the plate holding it in place. You need to work the plate off very carefully to avoid bending/breaking-off the two top tabs.

Re-assembly is reverse, making sure you insert top two tabs first and then snap lower left tab into place.

Good luck.

Thanks for that, your fast response is much appreciated:) The dent is actually not on the front of the camera but on the top (the plate that houses the on/off switch) It looks to me like l need to remove the 2 plastic looking screws along the side of the camera (the side the lcd swivels out to) but l could be wrong. Any ideas?

Brent, I've had an A70 apart (and most other models), and I'm sure the A80 is the same in most respects except for the swivel LCD. I have access to an A80 here at work, so let me take a quick look at it.

It would be helpful if you could post a small pic of where the dent is. That way I can try to guide you to the easiest disassembly method for what you need to access to fix the dent.

BTW, dents add character to your camera. Have you considered just letting it be?

Thanks again. I am happy to leave it alone but little things like this bug me if l know l can fix them easily :) If you have access to an A80 the dent (which isn't huge l might add) when looking down from the top of the camera is right in the middle of the raised Powershot lettering. I'd like to take a picture to show you but this is my only camera. Cheers.
