Is this a good macro?
I'm looking for 1:1 magnification, is this lens 1:1?

There is a survey of macro lenses on the macro forum; http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=160960

The Canon 100mm F2.8 seems to be the lens of choice. Although there also seems to be agreement that all of the listed lenses are of good quality and will produce excellent images depending on the skill of the user.

The 35-105mm is probably an old lens. I've never heard much about it, but most modern zoom lenses and even some prime lenses have a 'macro' function, which is really a gimmick. It simply means 'close focusing'. A true macro lens will go to 1:1 magnification and higher.

I only know of one zoom that gets close to a macro lens, and that's the old Vivitar 90-180mm flat-field macro lens. It's not available in EF mount though. It was apparently a great lens on the old Canon FD mount cameras. I believe it goes to 1:2 magnification without accessories.
