I don't know how many of you grew up watching the cartoon series from the 80's, but it was one of my favorite cartoon series of all time. And the upcoming movie looks like a real winner. Doesn't hurt that Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay are the driving force behind this... ;)

http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/transformers_hd.html

It got my blood pumping.

I'm excited as well because my older sons loved that series and I think we got every Transformer, including the huge ones somewhere in the house. Should be very good in the theaters because every little and big boy from Hawaii to Maine will want to see it.

Loved the cartoon. My younger bro even broke out a tear watching the first Transformers movie where Optimus Prime kicked the bucket. Can't wait to see the new one. If the pictures above are any indication, I'd say it's using a similar movie effect from "300".... dark and almost shot in B&W.

Hmmm... I think I like the new look of Bumble Bee.

Keeping in mind of course that this is a modern treatment of a classic cartoon. Things have to be carefully looked at and revamped for mass appeal, and you have to consider what will make it "cool" for a new generation. Sort of like not making Wolverine wear yellow spandex in the X-Men movies. It just wouldn't work. ;)

Yep, I thought it was great! Much better than spiderman and fantastic four (both of which were a bit of a let down for me). Lots of action, decent comedy and the Transformers (and the transforming) is pretty cool as well. All in all, I would rate it a 9.5 out of 10.

I saw it on Tuesday and liked it alot. Grew up in the 80s and watched the cartoon series as well as the first animated movie, I enjoyed everything about it.

I watched First Look on HBO about the making of the movie and was really surprise to find out that some scenes I thought were CGI but turned out to be real with stunt drivers and real explosives. Cool.

I give it a 10 :)

PURE AWSOMENICITY!!!

I followed two recommendations from another forum and they were quite helpful:

1 Sit toward the back so you can view the entire screen as a lot of the action is filmed up close
They said that center section was even too close, I'm glad that I sat about 3/4 of the way back based on that recommendation

2 Stay thru the end of the credits, nuff said :)

I've heard buzz that there's a sequel already in the planning, and possibly a trilogy?

I just saw it for the Second time tonight, still as bloody awsome and fantastic as the first time!
The mate I went even concvinced me to stop by a toy shop on the way to the cinema.
We walked out with a transformer each................

....then spent 40 minutes in the car part trying to get the damn things to transform!
Went from feeling 10 to feeling 30 again rather quickly!

(I still can't get the legs right on Blackout, if anyone has one.......)

I grew up with transformers as well. Been waiting for this flick for like 2years since I heard it was being made.
Best movie I think I have ever seen. Gave me goose bumps and makes you wanna stand up and cheer and stuff with the music and cinimatography. It was AWESOME..I saw it 2nd time yesterday and wanna see it again. just hearing optimus was like awe inspiring. Sure they could have done things here and there to make it closer to original. I think the changes they made where perfect and some necissary. I wouldnt really change a thing except get it on DVD already so I can watch it over and over.

And if you follow the history of the transformers they have changed several times. Magatron even did time as a Tank!

I grew up with the Transformers as well. Owned one, saw the cartoons and such, but honestly wasn't the biggest fan. I think I mainly played with them because the guy I fancied did. hehe So pardon me for not remembering much of the original stuff.

The movie was above expectations (I really didn't expect it to be very good). I laughed a lot, rolled my eyes at Optimus Prime's speeches (but he was and always will be a saint) and I also found the last fight a bit too long. The animation was awesome, but a bit too much details.

I'm glad I havn't meet any of these guys yet.
They are not only missing out on enjoying a really, really good movie, but missing a major part of what a transformer is:

A robitic lifeform able to transform into what ever form is needed to best suit its environment.

Michael Bay even makes a point of highlighting this in the movie when the Autobots all land on earth and transform into a variety of different vehicles.
While the Decepticons take on military forms to help them get the information they need, and shut down abity of people to fight back.

Good observation. Makes perfect sense, as Megatron is seen only in his raw form and native alien fighter jet.

That's it. I'm buying the Ultimate Bumblebee Transformer when it's available in stores...

Not the same personality though.. In the old series, he was the little outcast who tried really hard to fit in with the bigger, stronger robots. In this one he's a hardass Camaro with no voicebox :)

I concur. We all loved Bumblebee as a bug, but he just kicks major robot ass as a camaro. I loved the way he's portrayed in the film. A manly defender of the weak, not a girly-man wuss robot in disguise. In the animated series he did have a stout heart. Brave little Autobot he was...

Yeah, but the butt-whuppin' he got from Starscreams missiles knocked his voice box back into action. LOL.

The movie is even better the second time around. Watching the previews for the film still gives me the goosebumps. ;)

I think Robotech was the very last cartoon I watched... and even then I remember being a bit embarrassed about it. Transformers were too late for me -my younger bro watched them- and then I remember another big cartoon, thundercats or something, but I was already making out by then. So in comparison, cartoons were lame.

I did watch Tom & Jerry, and the Pink Panther from age 4 to 14, so that is 10 years of cartoon addiction. The newer cartoons I never understood.

Got a Best of Tom & Jerry for fathers day or for my Bday, can't remember, and I watch it with my five year old quite often.

I hate the violence in cartoons today. What happened to the old running into the ironing board? Getting pummeled in the head by a sledge hammer? Mauled by a dog? Blown up by a TNT stick? Those were the days.

Great movie. There’s all ready talk about Transformers 2. I kind of want to know about the movie trailer that was shown before the movie. It sounded like a Godzilla movie, but doubt full since final wars was suppose to be the last one, but who knows. People have been speculating its one of the up coming movies Voltron or Gamera. Yep there bringing back Voltron too,lol...

I read the something similar about the possibility of a Gamera flick as well, but personally I'm content with the Transformers franchise for now. Now that it has proven to be successful, every studio will be jumping through hoops trying to cook up the next big block buster based on a toyline or some cartoon series from the 80's. Same thing happened with the fantasy genre when Lord of the Rings came out. All of the sudden there was a plethora of fantasy epics (think Chronicles of Narnia, Eragon, Harry Potter, Bridge to Terabithia, 300, etc...) coming out the woodwork.

Saw the film last night, I was REALLY into transformers when I was a kid. I am really impressed with this adaptation, stunning really. I little too directed toward the kids, but understandable.

The CGI is something out of this world, 'bots should have had more dialog, especially the major characters from the cartoon like Starscream, Bumblebee, Megatron etc. Why Soundwave wasn't there I don't know, especially as Frenzy was around. Oh well.

I'm going to watch it again with my friend this weekend and then again with another friend next week. 9 out of 10 from me!

All seem like good questions. And they'll probably be answered in the sequel. I suspect they're saving some surprises in future movies as far as the story and characters go. There were so many Decepticons and Autobots in the cartoons, comics, toys, the original animated movie and Transformers G2 after the movie (Beast Wars and all that other stuff if you really want to count that), they couldn't have put them all in the first story line. Sure we've seen Frenzy, but there's still more spybots like Rumble, Ravage, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, etc. Perhaps characters like Soundwave (my personal favorite), Shockwave, Jetfire, Sideswipe, the Dinobots, Constructicons (doubt it since we've seen Bonecrusher get taken out by Optimus Prime - Insecticons then perhaps?), and maybe even Unicron, etc. will eventually show up in later sequels.

Beastwars was my favorite!

This movie was ok. Action packed, yes. But very predictible. Yet, very funny. Michael Bay is not one of my most favorite director but he can produce some very good films (armageddon and the island), this was up there on his best work list.

2007 Transformers film
Almost from the moment the live action Transformers movie was announced in 2004, producer Don Murphy and the production team made it clear they did not want to feature mass/size shifting in transformation, due to concerns over realism. With this process an inherent part of Soundwave's tape deck alternate mode, there was some discussion over whether or not to change it, or to include the character in the film at all. Early leaked movie scripts proposed that his alternate mode would be a helicopter, but animatics shown at the 2005 Comic Con were poorly received. This led to a rethink, with the eventual helicopter character rechristened Blackout.

2006 script reviews named Soundwave as a spying boombox on Air Force One, able to transform into a small robot, but eventually, this character was amended to being Frenzy, with Don Murphy stating that Soundwave will be reserved for a future sequel, until they can "do him right."

Thanks Wikipedia:D:D Soundwave was in the movie, in spirit:p....Wait do they have spirits? Nevermind

Soundwave and HotRod were my two faves that werent in the movie.

C'mon BumbleBee was always cool.

Sequels
On May 30, 2007, DreamWorks greenlit two sequels to Transformers.[110] Shia LaBeouf,[111] Megan Fox[112] and Peter Cullen[44] are signed on to return. Producer Tom DeSanto has envisioned a storyline introducing the Dinobots, Constructicons, and Soundwave.[19] Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman may not return, as "the next Star Trek is taking up [most] of our time."[30] Michael Bay has not signed on, "trying to keep some leverage for the negotiations,"[44] but already has ideas, including an aircraft carrier character.[113] The producers expect that with a bigger budget and the special effects worked out, the Transformers will have a larger role.[114]

Yeah, it was heard the very first time Blackout transformed at the very beginning. My guess is they threw the sound effect in there as a nod to G1. The new tranforming sound is more realistic. ;)

I agree, I like it. Hearing that cartoon sound would probably have killed the effect a little.

Sure I went "OOOh nice" when I heard it that one time, but never thought while watching the movie, "man they need to incoporate the old sound in the new transformations."

Right on. Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime is the original and still the best. ;)

Yeah, the cool part about them incorporating the old transforming sound effect was the fact that it was carefully woven in or "mixed" into the new sound effect during that scene. Those who weren't paying attention probably missed it. And those who never watched G1 as a kid didn't have a clue. Brilliant!
