There is a comparison of the 24-70 and 28-70 at www.luminous-landscape.com.

It's out of production, so the best place to get information on it (or any Canon lens that's no longer made) is the Canon Museum. Here's the link to this lens.

it's perfect!

Just because it's no longer made by Canon doesn't make it inferior - especially considering the price difference between a used but mint 28-70L and a new 24-70L. That's what persuaded me to buy mine and it's a stunning lens - no regrets at all. Go for it!
Hope this helps,
Barry

I love my 28-70. Also have a 24-70 in the studio, but generally tend to cary my older one when shooting for myself. The results are generally outstanding and if you are offered a good deal on it then by all means pick it up. The biggest complaint I have about the older lens is the flare is much more noticeable when shooting into late day sun. I will post un edited photos from this weekend if you are interested in the flare, but first I need some detailed instructions on how to post these photos here at this site.

Anybody got one to sell? (28-70 f2.8, that is.) I had one, maybe a bad copy, sold it, but back with interest to fill a hole in my lineup.

Your location says Chicago, Check the Chicago Craigslist. There was one on there in the past week. I believe it was in pretty good condition. I think it was going for ~$750.

Actually, I do have one in great condition that I'm considering putting up for sale...mainly due to a serious lack of use. If you're interested, shoot me a PM or email.

the 28-70 is a really good lens
i agree it has a lot of flare with lights in the frame
not very sharp wide open with my copy...but from 3.5+ it is really nice

the 28-70 is a really good lens, but due to its limited wide capabilities (28mm), it is not as versatile as the 24-70.
Another issue is that there may not be any parts available in the case the lens breaks down.

Thanks for all the responses so quickly -- what a great group.
I already have the 16-35 and 70-200 and I'd like a zoom in-between for walking. I don't need the 24 end, actually would like a 35-70 or 28-80 (haha) to minimize the overlap.

Yeah, my old one was a disappointment. Not sharp on a flat plane, and very boring for me. It was my first lens for my first 1Ds Mark I after a life of Leica, Zeiss and Schneider glass. I blame the sharpness on the used-factor and/or copy, and my boring experience from being my only lens at the time. I bought some primes to fill in the 2 zooms that I love so much, and have been using an old classic 28-70 f3.5-? too often now. I'm back to diggin' the focal range.

The 28-70L is still serviced by Canon...no worries.
