Sorry if this has been covered, has a search couldn;t find a direct answer.
Can lenses from a 400D fit a 5D?
I invisian they may fit up but may not work well with the sensors.
What lenses will be interchangable between these two bodies?
I have a
ef-s18-55
ef 70-300
sigma 10-20mm ex dc
these are for the 400D
However i have to borrow a 5D will these lenses work fine?
(if the 5D has lenses that won't suit my work.)

The 18-55 will not fit. The 10-20 will fit, but will probably not provide satisfactory results due to the fact that it is designed for APS-C sized sensors. So, you will have significant vignetting. The EF 70-300 will fit and is designed for FF sensors and film cameras.
What do you plan to shoot with the 5D? Why do you need the 5D instead of using your 400D?

The 10-20 will attach but will have a big black square around the image.

Any lens that is EF-S will not fit the FF 5D. Some of the Sigma and Tamron lenses also won't fit.

Canon EF-S lenses won't physically fit. Sigma DC and Tamron Di-II lenses will fit physically but are designed for smaller APS-C sized sensors and will cause vignetting.

thank you for the feed back.
The 400D came up with err99 so it is on vacation with canon for 2 weeks.
So i have had to borrow a friends 5D which she only has one lense for it.
I am an automotive photographer, so i am booked with cars for the next 2 weeks.
I just tried the lenses, ef-s, like stated won't fit. the ef 75-300 works nicely.
the sigma is like looking down a tube, nice affect but will look crap for my work.
I was considering buying a second body in a 5D and using the lenses i have, but only one i can use anyway.
But a back body is definitly on the cards.

Every EF lens that fits your 400D will fit a 5D, with two exceptions:
1. EF-S lenses do not fit and cannot be used. Those are the 10-22, 18-55 kitlens, 17-55IS, 17-85 and 60 Macro.
2. Sigma DC, Tokina DX and most Tamron Di lenses do fit and can be used, but they will not fill the entire 5D frame, since they were designed for 1.5x and 1.6x cams - they have a reduced image circle. Of course the other Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses can be used without a problem.
So from what you've got, only the EF 70-300 can be used on a 5D.
You can find tons of info on this on this forum and everywhere on the net.

From what 5D owners have said on this forum, it will show the flaws in a lens, so using good glass is almost a necessity. Your choice of wider lenses will be somewhat limited as a result. The 16-35L and the 17-40L would be two lenses that would cover the focal range of the kit lens. I believe the Sigma 12-24 is the only UWA that can be used on the 5D.

Used the 5D today, using the 28-135mm ef lense (ultrsonic).
Did an OK job, but not a lense of choice, Obvioulsy she uses this for her work(weddings).
